Sidmouth is one of my favourite towns in England. It has a somewhat genteel air to it, and perhaps that's why it has become a popular place for those who are looking for somewhere very nice and relatively quiet to retire. A large part of the town has been designated a conservation area, and the wide Esplanade has been a prominent feature since Regency times. Sidmouth is surrounded by the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is on the Jurassic Coast, which runs for 90 miles along the Devon and Dorset coasts. The red sandstone cliffs either side of the town date from the Triassic period, 220 million years ago.
