Dirleton Castle and its beautiful grounds and gardens are just a couple of miles to the west of North Berwick in East Lothian. The earliest parts of the castle date from the late 1200s. It was badly damaged in several wars in the Middle Ages and has not been used as a residence since the middle of the 17th century. Dirleton came into state care in 1923 and the ruins and gardens are now maintained by Historic Environment Scotland. The Firth of Forth can be seen in the distance.
