I hadn't heard of Dirleton Castle and gardens until our latest visit to East Lothian when we deliberately set out to find some new places to explore. This is just a couple of miles east of North Berwick and dates from the 13th century. It was severely damaged by wars in the Middle Ages and was finally attacked by Oliver Cromwell's army in 1650. It has been disused since the end of the 17th century when its then owner, John Nisbet, Lord Dirleton, decided to build a new country house on the nearby Archerfield Estate. The Nisbet family of Dirleton continued to maintain the castle's gardens, before handing Dirleton into state care in 1923. The ruins and gardens are now maintained by Historic Environment Scotland.
