Southwold, on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, is one of the gems of the English seaside. There are some beautiful Georgian houses on the cliff top towards the southern end, while the lighthouse is situated back in the town itself. Much of the town was destroyed in a fire in 1659, and this left many open spaces which have now been grassed over, providing several delightful large greens. The town, which overlooks Sole Bay - the scene of a major sea battle with the Dutch in 1672 - is also home to the Adnams brewery.
