Architecturally, Stokesay Castle is "one of the best-preserved medieval fortified manor houses in England", according to historian Henry Summerson. It comprises a walled, moated enclosure, with an entrance way through this 17th-century timber and plaster gatehouse. On the right is the Church of St John the Baptist, which is a rare example of the Commonwealth style. It originally dated from around 1150 but was badly damaged in the English Civil War and was subsequently rebuilt.
