This building dates from 1451, when it was a church house that was used as almshouses. It was refurbished in 1637 when it was converted into eight single room dwellings. Subsequently the building became a workhouse in the 18th century and was then converted back into dwellings in the 19th century. Built from Dartmoor granite, these alms houses are at the edge of Moretonhampstead, the gateway to the High Moor. It is owned by the National Trust, but rented out to local residents.
