While I was up in the north-west of England for a couple of weeks I had my arm twisted to go to Morecambe, which is a traditional seaside resort. The City of Lancaster is just a couple of miles inland. Like so many other English seaside resorts, Morecambe's best days are now behind it. It was particularly successful in the mid-20th century and actually had two seaside piers. But both have now gone. The main railway station near the promenade was closed in 1994 and replaced by a much smaller station nearer the town centre. At low tide there is an extensive sandy beach. Elsewhere in the vastness of Morecambe Bay the sand stretches for miles, but the tide races in very quickly and can easily catch people out. Sadly, a number of cockle pickers were drowned several years ago. For a few days it made national newspaper headlines.

In the far distance can be seen the mountains of the Lake District, while a few miles to the east is the Forest of Bowland. Beyond that is the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Despite the unfortunate and perhaps inevitable decline of the town it is nonetheless a nice part of the world.
