Please take a look at the 6 images (with dates and captions) in the first comment box, re. the life and times of a Glaucous-winged Gull Family. Thanks.

In the main post, a parent with two remaining 27 day old chicks on a North Vancouver rooftop are impatiently waiting for the other parent to arrive with food.

Please view the images (dated and with captions) in the first comment box that document the ensuing drama.

Unfortunately, while learning to fly, this 34 day old gull chick landed on the lower roof (probably on July 26)! Not strong enough to fly up to the upper roof to rejoin his family, it slowly starved to death. I was appalled and frustrated that the parents made no attempt to feed it!!

Aug 01, 2020: This 39 day old gull, the only one of the three chicks to survive, is taking regurgitated food from the beak of one of its parent on the upper roof. Until it is fledged, this is the only way it can get food.

In the 8 images below the weaning process appears to last 3 days before the juvenile gull finally gives up and flies off to fend for itself.

Juvenile Glaucous-winged gulls are brown or gray with black beaks, and take four years to reach adult plumage. They peck the adult's red subterminal spot at the end of its bill in order to stimulate regurgitative feeding. Juveniles fledge at six weeks.

Gulls feed along the coast, scavenging for dead or weak animals, fish, mussels and scraps. In urban areas they accept food from people and peck open unprotected garbage bags in search of edibles. PS This probably explains how this juvenile survived 19 days away from the roof top nest and its parents. (Summarized from Wikipedia)
