Day 2: On the road again in beautiful sunshine and on dry pavement.

Oops! Spoke too soon! Hwy 1 ( Roger's Pass) closed due to an avalanche. Will reopen, hopefully, in 4 hrs. Sigh! :-(

On the brighter side I can now look fwd to taking some fotos of the avalanche and then sharing them with you :-)

The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) is a wild goose belonging to the genus Branta, which is native to arctic and temperate regions of North America, having a black head and neck, white patches on the face, and a brownish-gray body. [...] The black head and neck with white "chinstrap" distinguish the Canada Goose from all other goose species.

Arrived safely back at our vacation log home where the lake is still frozen and the geese, like this pair, are already staking out and protecting their nesting locations, on the small islands we built, against intruders.

Have a lovely Thursday and thanks for visiting.

Western Skunk Cabbage (Lysichiton americanus), also called Yellow Skunk Cabbage or Swamp Lantern, is a plant found in swamps and wet woods, along streams and in other wet areas of the Pacific Northwest, where it is one of the few native species in the arum family. The plant is called Skunk Cabbage because of the distinctive "skunky" odor that it emits. This odor will permeate the area where the plant grows, and can be detected even in old, dried specimens. The distinctive odor attracts its pollinators, scavenging flies and beetles. Although similarly named and with a similar smell, the plant is easy to distinguish from the Eastern Skunk Cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus), another species in the arum family found in eastern North America.

Description
The plant grows from rhizomes that measure 30 cm or longer, and 2.5 to 5 cm in diameter. The leaves are the largest of any native plant in the region, 50–135 cm long and 30–80 cm wide when mature. Its flowers are produced in a spadix contained within a large, bright yellow or yellowish green spathe 30–40 cm tall; it is among the first flowers to appear in spring. The blooming stem produces heat, which can be sufficient to melt the snow around the plant

Nice to see the return of the Great Blue Heron (even though they enjoy eating our trout) in and around our lake and slough (wetlands).

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North and Central America as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. It is a rare vagrant to Europe, with records from Spain, the Azores, England and the Netherlands. [...].

It feeds in shallow water or at the water's edge during both the night and the day, but especially around dawn and dusk. It uses its long legs to wade through shallow water, and spears fish or frogs with its long, sharp bill.
