Tunnel leading to the Caponier where the defenders could fire on attackers attempting to climb the fort's outer walls.

York Redoubt is full of military history that has helped protect the historic port of Halifax throughout three centuries of Canadian history. York Redoubt was constructed in 1793 just as war broke out between Britain and France

York Redoubt is full of military history that has helped protect the historic port of Halifax throughout three centuries of Canadian history. York Redoubt was constructed in 1793 just as war broke out between Britain and France.

These guns were first built during the 1860s.

This massive weapon fired 256-pound shells which could smash through nine inches of wrought-iron armour on a enemy ironclad warship. It took nine men to operate. A good rate of fire was one shot every 1 minute 45 seconds.

The gun is mounted on a track which allowed the gun to rotate in a full circle, and fire in any direction.

The name Nine-Inch Rifled Muzzle-Loaded means that this gun fired shells which were nine inches in diameter. The barrel was rifled, with spiral groves cut into its inner surface. Lugs in the side of the shell fitted into these groves. This made the shell spin, which helped it to fly in a straighter line. The shells were loaded through the muzzle, or front end.

A crane on the gun mount was used to hoist the shell up to the muzzle for loading.

The cartridge contained 50 pounds of gun powder.

Herring Cove is a small fishing community not far from Halifax. (2016 - pop.: 3140). It is near the western approaches to Halifax Harbour.

HMS Tribune was a Royal Navy 36-gun frigate. It was originally the French frigate Charente Inférieure, which was launched in 1793 and renamed Tribune the next year. The British captured her and took her into service with the Royal Navy. She only served for a year before being wrecked near here. Of the 240 people on board, all were lost but 12 of her crew.

Camera update: well since I have had the new camera I have only used the kit lens. Like all cameras, there are some good and bad shots. One thing to note is that with the new Sony cameras they have a X-FINE jpeg setting, this makes the files approx. 22mb big so a larger memory card may be required. I have not shot this camera in FINE to see if there is a big difference other than the files will be about half the size (more compression).

I do notice that when editing the X-FINE files they seem to allow me to do more adjustments without loosing anything. The difference between RAW and the X-FINE is very, very small and I am not saying what is better (to many pros and cons).

Another thing to think about is that some places will not allow you to upload files that are as large as X-FINE. For instance BLURB were I make my books does not like files over 20mb and my meetup group does not allow anything over 10mb..
