Church of St. James on Royal Square was built on the site of the former Gothic convent church of the Coudenberg Abbey, demolished by Charles of Lorraine.
The front façade of the church, erected between 1776 and 1787, is formed by the triangular pediment and the six Corinthian columns like a ancient Greek-Roman temple. During the French revolution church was transformed into a "Temple of Reason", and later a "Temple of Law". In 1802, the church was returned to the Roman Catholic religion. On July 21st, 1831, Leopold I, the first Belgian king, took the constitutional oath on a decorated stage in front of the church. Church of St. James is also the official church of the Belgian armed forces.
Statue in front of St. James church is Godfrey of Bouillon (c. 1060 – 18 July 1100). He was a medieval Frankish knight who was one of the leaders of the First Crusade from 1096 until his death. He was the Lord of Bouillon from 1076 and the Duke of Lower Lorraine from 1087. After the successful siege of Jerusalem in 1099, Godfrey became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, although he refused the title "King"; as he believed that the true King of Jerusalem was Christ.

Battle of Waterloo was fought between the British, Germans, Belgians, Dutch and Prussians against the French Grande Armée.
45% were Germans, 35% was British and 20% Dutch/Belgian. So roughly only 1/3 of Wellingtons army was British.
Waterloo Battlefield - Lion hill, rises above the former battlefield and is visible from afar. It was constructed between 1823 and 1826 on the place where the Prince of Orange received his fatal wounds. The hill was built up with 32,000 cu.m (42,000 cu.yd) of earth from the battlefield to a height of 40 meters (131 ft) and a circumference of 520 meters (1,706 ft) on a supporting brick base. From the platform there is a panoramic view of the battlefield.
The French defeat at Waterloo drew to a close 23 years of war beginning with the French Revolutionary wars in 1792 and continuing with the Napoleonic Wars from 1803. There was a brief eleven-month respite when Napoleon was forced to abdicate, exiled to the island of Elba. However, the unpopularity of Louis XVIII and the economic and social instability of France motivated him to return to Paris in March 1815. The Allies soon declared war once again. Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo marked the end of the Emperor's final bid for power, the so-called '100 Days', and the final chapter in his remarkable career.
