Yesterday as dusk approached a bittern flew over my head and quickly disappeared into the reeds. I tried to track the bird as I watched the reeds move, but to no avail. Soon there were three other bitterns that flew into the same spot to roost for the evening. However, this morning I was surely surprised when I spotted this bittern.

I love watching any bird preen and this crane sure has a long neck to reach important places! I was able to sit close-by and share company with this solitary crane.

Holy smokes, did I get lucky! I was trolling along in Viera, when I spotted two caracaras perched on posts. I really like the symmetry here along with the over the shoulder look and the feet hanging over the sides of the post. Shortly after this snap a hawk flew in to harass the caracaras but they flew up to a pine tree and the hawk flew away.

Today was all about the anhingas. This is prime breeding season and it was interesting to witness breeding behaviors. The monogamous pairings displayed beak fencing, neck rubbing, neck pointing, and plenty of fighting as the males fiercely defended their mate and their nest. Both males and females have the most beautiful turquoise coloring around their eyes during their breeding season. Soon anhinga chicks will arrive...
