Northern Gannet on Bonaventure Island, Quebec. Just returned from this amazing colony, 100,000 strong and non stop action. Heavenly and amazing.

Such a beautiful bird with a six foot wing span.

Here's a three year old with still plenty of black feathers. In their fourth year they are white with black wingtips and the golden crown. A little braking action as he steadies before landing.

Every year the male and female return to their nest area to raise one chick. Specifically, they return to the exact spot they occupied the year before. Often, they will "re-do" the nest with seaweed, feathers, or grass. A kind of sprucing up, and also a very attractive way to keep the little lady happy. The monogamous couple share in incubation and feeding. They arrive in May and leave for the Gulf in September.
