Taken in Southern California. There had been a coot kill and various hawks had left only feathers so this girl was looking for scraps!

This common loon glided on the golden water with the chick at its side. We were on a small lake in a canoe and twisted into any position possible to photograph this amazing sight! ISO and SS were increased to compensate for the less than stable positioning that occurred as we wrangled for a shot.
