I returned to the marsh down the road yesterday afternoon. It was cloudy and drizzly and at times raining steadily. Nevertheless, I was determined to shoot. I spent almost all of the time focusing on this female who was quite busy gathering bugs. SHe would have a dozen or so in her beak and perhaps fly and perch for twenty minutes or so before she would pop up with a new assortment of insects. My favorite moments were when the wings served as both moustache and beard!
I really enjoyed the detailed observation throughout the afternoon as she made her routine known to me. Eventually I was able to track her returning to her nest. I believe there are eggs but I am not sure because of the heavy insect gathering, maybe there are hungry mouths to stuff... I plan on becoming a regular there and hope to watch the nesting season unfold. BTW, the handsome males didn't collect any food but they did alot of heavy watching and flashing their red/orange and yellow coverts
