Yesterday, 12 July 2022, I knew I was going to have to go out for a drive. The forecast was for 31C, and my home was going to be unbearably hot inside. The only way to escape for a few hours was to be in my car's air-conditioning. The Heat Warning is still in effect and the next few days are going to be very hot again.
My final destination was going to be west of Calgary. It had been quite a while since I last visited Forgetmenot Pond, and I was hoping to see at least a few different things. This spring, I have missed almost all the wildflowers, not to mention birds. I did find wildflowers, but it was windy and most of my photos turned out very blurry. It was also very hot, getting up to 32C, which is much too hot for me.
On the way to Forgetmenot Pond, I called in at a different pond and walked just a short way across a bush-filled meadow. Eventually reaching the forest, i had only taken a few steps, when I heard the most awful, loud sound. I managed to find a small gap in the trees and caught sight of a large bird in flight. Only saw one, though there could have been more than one. My guess was that it might be a Great Blue Heron. Listening on my computer just now to the sound that this species makes, I think my guess is right. What concerned me more than anything was wondering what had startled this Heron. After all, I was in Bear country! At that point, I reckoned it was time to turn around and head back to my car. Came across a little White-crowned Sparrow on the way.
Forgetmenot Pond was busy, just as I had expected. My plan was not to stay very long, just long enough to walk part way round the pond to take a handful of photos. It was so unbearably hot!
Heading homeward, I drove along a few of my usual backroads. Not much in the way of wildlife, so maybe they were sheltering from the heat. I did watch a female White-tailed Deer for a few minutes, and I did see several of my usual birds.

I had pulled over so that I could take a photo or two of the large white Thistles growing near the edge of the road. Turned my head to look out of the passenger window and there was this little Columbian ground Squirrel standing up, watching me. Didn't stay standing, unfortunately.

Feeling so very sad for you, Bonnie. You are in my thoughts.
