Yesterday, 10 July 2022, I took my daughter for a drive SW and then SE of Calgary. I picked her up around 10:30 am and we enjoy a few hours looking for anything beautiful and/or interesting. This little black and white barn was found along a road we had never been on before. It reminded me of a larger black and white barn that is one of my absolute favourites, which we also went to on the way home.

Our day started off in the Frank Lake area, including a very quick stop at Frank Lake itself. There were quite a few Pelicans there, but we did see one swimming on its own.
It had no flattened horn (known as a caruncle) on the upper bill. My thoughts went immediately to 'Elsa", but maybe all American White Pelicans have now lost their breeding 'horns'.

Driving north from Highway 23, we then turned westwards, crossing Highway 2. One can't help but be in awe of the most beautiful scenery in that whole area. So many roads there that I have not yet explored - i.e. so many old barns that I have not seen, I'm sure.

One of the small side roads that we quickly drove into caught our eye because of a row of old sheds. My daughter spotted two beautiful Mule Deer bucks with their splendid velvet-covered antlers, right by the sheds. After a few photos were taken, we continued up the road a short way so that we could turn around to get back to the main road. My daughter, with her eagle-eyes, spotted a young deer hiding in the grassy ditch. Felt bad that we disturbed it, but it ended up hurrying back towards the adults.

A little further west, we changed to the highway going north and and then, after driving a short distance to the west, continued on a back road that soon turned into the main highway heading north. I was hoping that we could see a few of the birds that I had been seeing recently in the Priddis area, but we were out of luck. Not even a Wilson's Snipe.

A very enjoyable day with my daughter - always my favourite (but rare) days. Thanks for your company, Rachel!

We have a Heat Warning in effect, and it's going to be hot all this week. My place will be unbearable, so I will probably have to spend some of the time sitting in my car's air-conditioning.
