Coronavirus update, 12 March 2020: it has reached Alberta, including Calgary and Edmonton, starting off with four cases in four days. Another three new cases were found, bringing the total to seven and then, later, that number doubled to 14 confirmed cases. Later yesterday, it was reported that there are five new cases, all of them tied to individuals who had recently travelled, bringing the total to 19. Apparently, 44 Albertans returned to the province Feb. 21 after travelling aboard the cruise ship. The AHS Calgary Zone extends west to Banff, east to Gleichen, north to Didsbury and south to Claresholm. The World Health Organization has officially declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Later today, report says that there have been four more cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Alberta, bringing the province’s total number of confirmed coronavirus cases to 23.

Yesterday afternoon, I had to run a few errands, including food shopping. Thought I would buy some hand sanitizer as I discovered that the small bottle I had was a year past date - I don't normally use it. Everywhere I tried, they were completely out of stock, except for one store where the check-out lady said she did have several tiny bottles. Toilet rolls are disappearing fast, too. I guess a lot of people have been doing panic shopping! Interesting to watch all this develop. Feel so bad for everyone in Italy, especially, with the whole country in lock-down!

Thursday, 12 March 2020: our temperature late this morning is -1C (windchill -5C). Beautifully sunny this morning, but snow flurries are forecast for this afternoon. Actually, we are under a Snowfall Warning. Sunrise is at 7:54 am, and sunset is at 7:37 pm.

Yesterday morning, 11 March 2020, I decided to join a group of friends for a two and a half hour birding walk in South Glenmore Park. I knew that we were in for snow over the next few days, so I thought I had better make the most of yesterday. The main path was bare in many places, but there were still areas of treacherous ice. The paths off the main one were really bad and I was very thankful that I had ice grips on my winter boots.

The group split in half for the morning and the total number of bird species between the two groups was only 11. The little Mountain Chickadees were appreciated so much.
