This giant, prehistoric-looking thing appeared on my 2nd-floor screen. It kept flexing as if looking to oviposit. 30 mm (without ovipositor).

Showy sawfly larva -- white with black squares, 15 mm long. I believe the host plant is wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia) -- it has a four-winged stem. Several matching photos from the same host appear on BugGuide (bugguide.net/node/view/1684276), but as of 2019 the entomologist there says that the species has not been described to science. Now published in 2022. A long wait for an ID, especially for such a striking critter!
