Mantova è una città in Lombardia, Italia. Nel 2016 è diventata Capitale italiana della cultura e nel 2017 Capitale europea della gastronomia. Il centro storico di Mantova è un sito del patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO Mantova è circondata su tre lati da laghi artificiali, creati durante il 12° secolo, come sistema di difesa della città. Questi laghi ricevono acqua dal fiume Mincio, un affluente del fiume Po che scende dal Lago di Garda. Il potere e l'influenza storica di Mantova sotto la famiglia Gonzaga la resero uno dei principali centri artistici, culturali e soprattutto musicali dell'Italia settentrionale e dell’Italia intera. Mantova è nota per il suo ruolo significativo nella storia dell'opera; la città è anche conosciuta per i suoi tesori architettonici e manufatti, eleganti palazzi e il paesaggio urbano medievale e rinascimentale. È il luogo in cui il Romeo fu bandito nella commedia di Shakespeare Romeo e Giulietta. E' la città più vicina al luogo di nascita del poeta romano Virgilio, che è stato commemorato da una statua nel parco sul lago "Piazza Virgiliana".
Mantua (Italian: Mantova) is a city in Lombardy, Italy. In 2016 it became Italian Capital of Culture and In 2017 the European Capital of Gastronomy. Mantua's old town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mantua is surrounded on three sides by artificial lakes, created during the 12th century, as the city's defence system. These lakes receive water from the Mincio River, a tributary of the Po River which descends from Lake Garda. Mantua's historic power and influence under the Gonzaga family has made it one of the main artistic, cultural, and especially musical hubs of Northern Italy and the country as a whole. Mantua is noted for its significant role in the history of opera; the city is also known for its architectural treasures and artifacts, elegant palaces, and the medieval and Renaissance cityscape. It is the place where the Romeo was banished in Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It is the nearest town to the birthplace of the Roman poet Virgil, who was commemorated by a statue at the lakeside park "Piazza Virgiliana".
