St Mary's church sits in its own green enclosure, shielded from the streets of Wirksworth by surrounding buildings that form the churchyard's perimeter. The sturdy tower crowned by its curious little lead-covered spirelet manage to assert themselves over the rooftops regardless.

The present cruciform church is a building of some size, but the site as much earlier origins as witnessed by the many fine pieces of Anglo Saxon carved stonework set into the walls inside, testament to an earlier age. The finest piece is the Wirksworth Stone, and intricately carved coffin lid found under the chancel in the 19th century and carved with two rows of figures.

There is thus much of interest inside the church, and many pieces which require seeking out in the often low lighting. The glass here is mainly from the Victorian restoration, but there are a couple of mid 20th century windows that admit more light.

Again this was a visit I wasn't prepared for with my usual kit, snapping away in low lighting without a tripod and trying the patience of my two old college friends who noticed I went on a bit of a mission once inside! Alas my photos don't do the place justice, so I won't be posting so many.
