St Botolph's church is a landmark in the southern part of the city and being usually open to visitors has become a welcome haven of peace from the bustle of the street outside. The dedication to this Saxon saint always amuses me in that no one ever christens their sons by the name 'Botolph' these days ;-)

The church is medieval with a chancel rebuilt in the late Victorian period. Entry is by the door of the west tower directly from the street, and stepping into this light and welcoming interior is a refreshing retreat from the noise outside. It is somewhat restored but there are several features of note, most prominently the curious canopied 17th century font near the west door, a rare Laudian survivor. There is a small chapel off the south aisle with a monument and some fine glass, though this generally isn't open, instead it can be viewed through the glazed screen into the aisle.

St Botolph's is one of the most welcoming and visitor friendly churches in the city being open daily, I've never found it locked.
