This is a carving on St Swithin's church Nately Scures near Basingstoke in Hampshire (the church dating back to the 10th century),. It depicts a mermaid who fell in love with a local sailor who was away at sea, and when he returned home she swam up the rivers from the sea to find her love, and carried him back off to sea.

Nice story, it's not the original carving though, which has now been taken inside to protect it from the elements.
