One lucky shot! On our cruise out of Seward, AK on Resurrection Bay we were given a fine show by this whale. Imagine my dismay, when I saw this happening and realized that I was on the wrong side of the boat. There was a wall of people who had all rushed to the rail to see the 'show' and were blocking my view. I kept trying to shoot through small gaps between people and was very happy to find I had managed to get one good shot.

We did have one good day of Humpback Whale sightings. It was exciting to be surrounded by the whales, watching their 'blows' and seeing a back or a fluke from time to time. When someone spotted a breaching whale, I raced to the side of the boat raised my camera and shot - no time to check my settings. I was happy to have seen and captured this breaching whale, but when I looked at my camera settings I saw that I my 70-200 lens set at 70mm. Darn! I had to crop this shot quite a bit.

It was a bit unnerving to come face to face with a Walrus at close range while sitting in an inflatable zodiac that is riding atop freezing arctic water. Our expedition leader, Martin, assured us that the zodiac had 7 individual compartments. So even if one of those compartments was puctured by a Walrus tusk the zodiac would be fine. I'm glad we didnt have to put that assumption to the test.

What an amazing day we had with the whales yesterday! This young Humpback (nicknamed Barney) gave us quite a show.

After shooting straight up this breaching Humpback "fell" backward into the ocean. They make a huge splash! A few times we were so close that we got misted with water droplets.
