Don and I were stopped for lunch along one of the backroads in San Benito County when I spotted this Falcon soaring overhead. I quickly took a few shots before it moved out of range. At the time I thought it was a Peregrine Falcon. It wasn't until I was looking at my bird ID book later that I realized that it was really a Prairie Falcon - an exciting sighting for me.

I like how the dancing aurora surrounds the trees. And the stars were amazing this night. It is a challenge to take any aurora shot - you work totally in the dark trying to 'feel' your camera buttons with gloves on. No easy feat when it is 10 or11 degrees out.

Last May on the way to Yellowstone we drove out to a herd of wild horses in Utah. Several of them thundered by kicking up dust as they ran past. They are not beautiful horses in the classical sense, but they have a wild, powerful and free presence.

This lapwing is the only crested wader in South America. It is 13 to 15 in. in length. The upperparts are mainly brownish grey, with a bronze glossing on the shoulders. The head is particularly striking; mainly grey with a black forehead and throat patch extending onto the black breast. A white border separates the black of the face from the grey of the head and crest. The eye ring, legs and most of the bill are pink. It is equipped with red bony extensions under the wings (spurs), used to intimidate foes and fight birds of prey. It is a common and widespread resident throughout South America, (Wikipedia)
