This crack in the lava looks a little like an open eagle beak with a little eagle head gargoyle over the cave entrance. You may see something different. Walking alongside the dried lava, you could often peer inside to see hot lava. It takes a while for the lava to cool below the crust it forms. Depending on which way it is flowing (assuming the vents are still active), it can break through and expand the surface area. There was virtually no risk of that happening here, but you could definitely feel the warmth coming through the vents just walking next to the lava walls. Geldingadalir, Iceland, April 2021
