Along the Vancouver waterfront are many amenities to view. From the statues and walkways, to hotels and cruise ships. There are however a few monuments as well. The Olympic Cauldron is one such notable monolith. If more information is of interest, google can supply all the information necessary.

On a personal note, my challenge was to make it as interesting as possible without the aid of the nighttime lights. Instead, I chose the opposite and the dramatic shadows seen by the camera that our eyes otherwise fill in. The juxtaposition of dark and light along with the unique structures, aided in the situation to create something special.

Photography can be so much fun in terms of both the process and the results that are possible. It allows us to use our imagination and transform our perceptions, ideas, and moods into a visual reality. We find that in order to be creative, it is often necessary to learn, be spontaneous, plan, and quite simply go.

Sometimes we travel, even if it is only to our own backyard. We record, and visualize creating memories for future reference. There is satisfaction in the endeavour and we are frequently left with the notion that our story of a place is told through our eyes. Yes, photography can be fun. And if we also explore, it typically results in a great deal of exercise.

I was out shooting this pier when the interplay of light and dark made its very strong presence. It was interesting how very strong the two were when opposed to each other and the rather clear delineation that existed between them. Somewhat like the "Yin & Yang", up & down, north & south, how can we know one without the other? Either way, for a brief moment, the story was no longer the structure, but instead a more etherial one that asks questions as mentioned above. How can we know one without the other, since all things are relative.

We were out Kayaking with another couple in our tandem boats when others needed to pass. We had purposefully come to a tight inlet where seals could be seen sunbathing however, it was feeding time and none were present. Although minutes prior to this shot, one came to within 20 feet or our Kayak to have a peek at us, then bolted with a splash. All the basic colors were present, from red to green, from yellow to blue, and more. The entire spectrum delighted our eyes with a treasure trove of visual sensations.

Just a typical old pier that was once used and now stands as a relic
