Moments before I clicked the shutter, this one-year-old Red-tailed Hawk had flown from a low perch in a nearby tree and pounced on a Smoke Bush, breaking off a piece of it in the process (the liberated piece originally landed on the bird's head, but I wasn't fast enough to catch that moment with my camera). I think the hawk was going after a large insect that had been in the 'fluff' of the shrub.
