With its vivid colours, densely laid paint and diagonal lines, this canvas eloquently illustrates the “Mosaic” technique that distinguishes Riopelle in the early 1950s. The French art historian Pierre Schneider recalls having experienced “one of the greatest emotions of (his) life” when he saw this painting in Riopelle’s studio on Rue Duratin in Paris. “Masses of chestnuts trees in full bloom were in view through the window. There was colour everywhere… I had never had a sense of absolute confusion between nature and art.”
