View on the town Archangeols from the path to the ruins of castle, which we visited :)
Archangelos is a town on the island of Rhodes. It's located on the east coast of the island. The town's name derives from Archangel Michael who is also considered its patron. Numerous small settlements existed in the broader area of Archangelos during the Hellenistic era, others on the coast and others inland. After the 7th century AD the settlements near the coast were abandoned due to the frequent invasions of pirates and their inhabitants settled on existing inland settlements or founded new ones in more secure areas. Over time the various settlements of the area were merged in one forming the town of Archangelos. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Knights Hospitaller who were occupying the island of Rhodes since 1309, built a castle (some sort of an Acropolis) on top of one of the town's nearby hills to protect from a possible Ottoman invasion on the island. Today some ruins remain with a 7 m tall fortification wall and the small chapel of Aghios Ioannis. From the ruins of the fortress is a nice view on surroundings.

Archangelos - miasto położone na wschodnim wybrzeżu Rodos, otoczone gajami pomarańczowymi i oliwnymi. Nazwa miejscowości wywodzi się od Archanioła Michała, który jest również jej patronem. Miasto zostało założone już w okresie hellenistycznym, jednak przez ciągłe napady piratów miejscowi byli zmuszeni do przeniesienia się w głąb lądu. Obecnie miasto od morza oddalone jest o ok. 3 km. Gęsto zabudowana osada charakteryzuje się labiryntami wąskich uliczek oraz starymi i zarazem oryginalnymi domami. Każdy z nich pomalowany jest żywym kolorem i ozdobiony ceramiką produkowaną w tej okolicy. Będąc w Archangelos warto zwiedzić ruiny zamku Joannitów, położone na wzgórzu górującym nad miastem. Zamek został wybudowany w drugiej połowie XV wieku na ruinach bizantyjskiej twierdzy w celu obrony przed Turkami. Do dnia dzisiejszego wrażenie robią pozostałości kilku metrowych murów oraz niewielka kaplica św. Jana. Z tego miejsca rozpościera się przepiękny widok na okolicę.
