No. 7.

Boat No. 7 once proudly served in the 'lighter' fleet transporting cargo from the supply ship which would be anchored out at sea.

Due to unfavourable conditions larger vessels cannot access the Kingston pier and so it is let to the expert seamanship of the locals and their equally hardworking 'lighters'.

The crew would/will take the boat out the the ship and load each one with cargo which they would then bring back to the pier.

Once at the pier man and hydraulic power would then utilise the crane that is located on the pier to unload the 'lighters' onto delivery trucks.

The terminlogy of 'lighter' comes from the fact that with each load of cargo unloaded from the boat the smaller boat it becomes lighter, hence the name, 'lighter'.

It is just another insight into how the locals adapt to local innovation.

No. 7 has now been retired from the 'lighter' fleet and today rests on the shores in the shadows of those 'lighters' who are still serving the need of the community.
