Actually, I'd wanted to upload something sunshiny and summery for Sliders Sunday, but then I remembered that 2023 marks the 70th anniversary of 17 June 1953, the Day of the East German Uprising. The uprising started on June 16 in East Berlin. Construction workers had decided to strike against unbearable work quotas. The momentum of this strike spread across the GDR and accumulated in a massive uprising in numerous East German cities and villages against the East German Government and the SED (the Socialist Unity Party). Workers were joined by students, people demanded free elections and the release of all political prisoners. Just like in Prague 15 years later, the East German Uprising could only be brutally stopped by Soviet forces who sent tanks to the streets of East Berlin. More than 50 people were killed during the uprising, several more were sentenced to death later. In West Germany and West Berlin, 17 June was celebrated as a public holiday until 1990 when it was replaced by the Tag der Deutschen Einheit (German Unity Day) which we celebrate each year on 3 October.

This photo doesn't have a direct connection to 17 June, it is related to the German division in general and specifically to the Berlin Wall since the White Crosses memorial remembers the people who were killed in their attempt of fleeing the GDR. The last victim of the Berlin Wall and the German division, Chris Gueffroy, was shot on 5 February 1989, only nine months before the Berlin Wall fell. He was only 20 years old.

In this particular spot in Berlin's government district, the border between West and East Berlin ran right through the river Spree. In fact, the opposite side of the Spree where you can now see the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus, one of many government buildings in the Mitte district, belonged to East Berlin, while this side of the Spree, the Reichstag building included, belonged partly to West Berlin. The white, highlighted strip in the lower right corner (next to the steps) marks the course of the Berlin Wall.

More boats and still more Berlin government district. I know, you've seen quite many boats on my stream this year (so finally it is a stream in the true sense), and a few more might follow. This is a view from the Kronprinzenbrücke (Crown Prince Bridge), so it's probably about time to also upload a photo of that bridge (which was designed by internationally renowned architect Santiago Calatrava and of which you can see one of its rusty "elbows" resting in the water of the Spree in the lower right corner of my photo) soon. And maybe it's also about time to go on another boat trip :) The two governmental buildings connected by the double bridge across the Spree are the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (MELH) on the left, and the Paul-Löbe-Haus (PLH) on the right. You can also see a little bit of the Reichstag building, the seat of the German government, behind the PLH.

Processing-wise I applied this and that mostly in Color Efex. What I remember of "this and that" is the Reflector Efex filter (Gold) to brighten the foreground, and the Tonal Contrast filter. Nik Collection's new version now also has control points for each filter, which is very convenient, so I also applied the Polarization filter, but only on the boat in the foreground, as it didn't look nice in the sky at all.

Bootsparade

Noch mehr Boote im Berliner Regierungsviertel :) Dieses Mal aufgenommen von der Kronprinzenbrücke (rechts unten könnt Ihr einen der rostigen Stahlträger der Brücke in der Spree sehen), also wäre es evtl. an der Zeit, demnächst nicht nur ein Foto von der Brücke selbst hochzuladen, sondern auch mal wieder eine solche Bootsfahrt zu machen :)

Ihr könnt hier die Doppelbrücke sehen, von der nur der untere Teil der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich ist und die das Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (links) mit dem Paul-Löbe-Haus (rechts) über die Spree hinweg verbindet. Hinter dem Paul-Löbe-Haus könnt Ihr auch ein wenig vom Reichstagsgebäude und der Kuppel sehen.

Bearbeitet für Sliders Sunday überwiegend in Color Efex. Mit dem Filter Reflektor Efex (Gold) habe ich den Vordergrund aufgehellt. Weitere verwendete Filter (soweit ich mich an sie erinnere, da ich hier mehrere Bearbeitungsschritte mit längeren Pausen dazwischen hatte) waren "Tonaler Kontrast" und Polarisation. Letzteren habe ich per Kontrollpunkt (die es in der neuen Nik-Version jetzt praktischerweise für jeden Filter separat gibt) nur auf das Boot im Vordergrund angewendet, da er beim Himmel gar nicht schön aussah.

More monochrome, and more from Berlin's government district. You've already seen this building, the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (MELH), several times in my stream. From this point of view, you can see how huge this building complex really is. And since it's Monochrome Thursday, and the sun had mostly been hiding behind the clouds on that day in May (so the light had not been so nice most of the time) I thought I'd process it in black and white. I decided against a version with one or more boats in it, because the boats were always covering the people in front of the MELH, and I thought it would actually be much nicer with that busy city bustle and the tiny people. And I think (pleasure) boats should be presented in colour 😉

Noch mehr SW und noch mehr vom Berliner Regierungsviertel. Das Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (MELH) habt Ihr ja schon des Öfteren in meinem Stream gesehen. Von diesem Standpunkt aus (mit dem Reichstagsgebäude im Rücken) kann man aber besonders gut sehen, wie groß der Komplex tatsächlich ist. Und weil heute Donnerstagsmonochrom an der Reihe ist und sich die Sonne an jenem Tag im Mai meistens hinter den dicken Wolken versteckt hatte (und deshalb das Licht nicht so toll war), dachte ich, ich probiere mal eine SW-Version. Ich habe mich gegen ein Foto mit Boot(en) auf der Spree entschieden, weil Letztere unweigerlich das geschäftige Treiben vor dem MELH verdeckt hätten, was ich hier (und in SW) aber ganz spannend finde. Und außerdem "müssen" Ausflugsdampfer in Farbe gezeigt werden, oder 😉 ?

Another one from Berlin's government district. These somewhat hidden stairs lead up to a small footbridge across the Spree which connects the Paul-Löbe-Haus (PLH) and the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (MEHL), both are governmental buildings. I've linked a photo in the first comment where you can see the bridge and the huge bull's eye window of the MELH. In the left corner of the MELH, where you can see the folded-up barriers (on the left of the dancers' group – please press "Z") is the entrance to the stairs leading up to the bridge. That's the spot I've taken this photo from. The bridge itself has two floors; the upper floor provides direct access to both the MEHLH and the PLH and therefore isn't open to the public (unfortunately).

Ein weiteres Foto vom Berliner Regierungsviertel. Diese etwas versteckt gelegene Treppe führt hinauf zu der schmalen Fußgängerbrücke über die Spree, die das Paul-Löbe-Haus mit dem Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (MEHLH) verbindet. Die Brücke ist zweigeschossig, der obere Teil verbindet beide Regierungsbebäude direkt, ist aber nur für Abgeordnete und Mitarbeiter der beiden Häuser zugänglich – leider ;). Im ersten Kommentar findet Ihr ein Foto mit besagter Brücke und könnt auch in etwa sehen, von wo ich dieses Foto gemacht habe – links, dort wo die zusammengeklappten Absperrungen stehen (direkt vor der Brücke und links von der Tänzerinnen-Gruppe aus gesehen) befindet sich der Eingang zur Brücke.

Das Foto habe ich in Silver Efex Pro in SW umgewandelt und anschließend noch ein paar kleinere Anpassungen mit dem Maskierungswerkzeug in Lightroom vorgenommen.

Another water taxi on the Spree, taken from the opposite Spree bank. As the water taxi in my previous photo, the "Prins Bernhard" (please see the first comment), the "Adele" chuggles down the Spree towards Berlin's central railway station, the Hauptbahnhof.
In this spot, the Reichtag building is on the right and almost at the rear of the viewer. On the right, you can still see a little bit of the Jakob-Kaiser-Haus that you can also see in my previous photo (and there it's on the left).

A nice bonus here was the group of all-female dancers rehearsing in front of the huge bull's eye window of the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (MELH). That spot obviously is a favourite meeting place for such groups, because at our previous visit to the government district only a few days before this visit there had been another dance group rehearsing their moves right in front of that huge, round window. Maybe it's a "see and be seen" type of thing, this spot certainly is perfect for that ;)

Die "Adele", ein weiteres Wassertaxi auf der Spree, das wie die "Prins Bernhard" auf meinem vorherigen Foto (zu finden im ersten Kommentar) spreeabwärts Richtung Hauptbahnhof tuckert. Dieses Foto habe ich vom gegenüberliegenden Spreeufer gemacht, sodass sich hier das Reichtagsgebäude auf der rechten Seite, quasi fast im Rücken des Betrachters, befindet. Rechts oben könnt Ihr noch ein Eckchen vom Jakob-Kaiser-Haus sehen.

Die Fläche vor dem riesigen Bullaugenfenster des Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Hauses (MELH) scheint ein beliebter Treffpunkt für Gruppen aller Art zu sein. Denn bereits bei unserem vorangegangenen Besuch des Reigierungsviertels nur wenige Tage vor diesem Besuch tummelte sich dort eine Tanztruppe und übte ihre Schritte. Die recht große Gruppe, die ihr hier sehen könnt, bestand ausschließlich aus Frauen, die dort offenbar eine komplette Probe durchgeführt hatten. Dieser Ort ist natürlich auch perfekt zum "Sehen und gesehen werden" ;)
