Deutscher Dom | German Cathedral #3

Oh dear, I realise that this last part (for now) of my mini series of the German Cathedral was due two Sunday's ago. So I better upload it today so as to not keep you waiting for another week (and also to open the way for some new captures which I took this week at the "cube berlin"). I do have more captures taken inside the German Cathedral, and also at the Gendarmenmarkt, and will post them peu à peu. But for now, this is the last one.

This is another kaleidoscoped Sunday slide (and please check out the fourth comment – I was too slow with posting the photo link –, because last year I had already posted a slide of an image taken during that visit at the German Cathedral's highest point : right under the cupola). The title came to my mind not only because of the rather obvious "vertigo"-inducing height of the tower, and the fact that this is a duplicated / mirrored / flipped-and-combined version of the tower, but it's also derived from the fact that back in the day the two buildings adjacent to the German and the French Cathedral were both used as churches. The "New Church" of the German Cathedral was used as a "Simultaneum", a double church for Calvinists and Lutherans, and the French Cathedral was a church for the, also Protestant, Hugenot immigrants to Prussia. The "kaleidoscoping" was easy here; I copied the original capture to a new layer in Photoshop, mirrored it, duplicated the canvas, combinded both the original and the mirrored image, and then, in Lightroom, rotated the final image to the right. I think the final result looks very natural, almost as if the building had been constructed that way and not the result of a composite done in PS.

I hope that the French Cathedral, which also houses the "Hugenot Museum", will be opened again for visitors soon. It's under renovation since 2017; it will be interesting to compare the German and French Cathedrals' interiors; as I've mentioned earlier, the German Cathedral's interior was reconstructed in a modern way – lots of raw concrete as you can see above and also in my previous picture from the series –, while I assume that the French Cathedral's interior will be reconstructed true to the original (here's a link that will take you to the French Cathedral's website where you can check out a few interior captures – unfortunately very small, but you can see the difference: www.franzoesischer-dom.de/pages/start/de/franzoesischer-d...).

Hier ist das – vorerst – letzte Bild meiner Mini-Serie vom Deutschen Dom. Ich habe noch einige Fotos vom Gendarmenmarkt und auch vom Innern des Deutschen Doms, die ich peu à peu hochladen werde, aber wann genau, weiß ich noch nicht. Diese Version ist ganz offensichtlich nicht die Originalansicht (siehe vorheriges Foto aus der Serie im Album), sondern wieder eine Kaleidoskop-Spielerei in Photoshop. Das Endresultat (Vorgehensweise: Originalbild auf eine zweite Ebene kopiert, gespiegelt, die Arbeitsfläche entsprechend vergrößert, beide Bilder mittig zusammengesetzt, zurück in Lightroom und dort das fertige Bild einmal nach rechts gedreht) sieht erstaunlich natürlich aus, finde ich, fast so, als wäre das Gebäude so konstruiert worden und nicht das Ergebnis einer Photoshop-Arbeit. Im vierten (ich war zu langsam) Kommentar findet Ihr ein weiteres Kaleidoskop-Bild vom Dom, aufgenommen am höchsten erreichbaren Punkt dort: direkt unter der Kuppel.

Ich hoffe, dass bald der Zwilling des Deutschen Doms, der Französische Dom, wiedereröffnet werden wird. Momentan sind letzterer und das Hugenotten-Museum wegen Renovierungsarbeiten geschlossen. Ein Vergleich des Innern der beiden Türme wäre sicher spannend, da ich anhand von Fotos (hier zu sehen, leider klein, aber man kann den Unterschied zum Deutschen Dom gut erkennen: www.franzoesischer-dom.de/pages/start/de/franzoesischer-d...) davon ausgehe, dass der Französische Dom, anders als der Deutsche, auch im Innern originalgetreu wiederhergestellt werden wird, also ohne die zweifelsohne faszinierende Rohbeton-Konstruktion des Deutschen Doms.

Deutscher Dom | German Cathedral #2

Part two of my mini series of the German Cathedral. This is a view of the tower's interior, right up to the cupola. Taken handheld (tripods aren't allowed inside) and in "neck pain" position since the Lumix LX100 doesn't have a swivel screen. You might be surprised to see raw concrete inside of a building that was erected between 1780–1785. This is due to the fact that the German Cathedral was badly damaged by an air raid in November 1943. When the German Cathedral was reconstructed in the 1980s, The exterior, as you can see in my previous photo, was reproduced true to the original, while the interior was modernised and the raw concrete spiral staircase construction was added. Since 2002 the German Cathedral houses the permanent exhibition "Milestones - Setbacks - Sidetracks. The Path to Parliamentary Democracy in Germany" on five levels of the tower (the highest level leads visitors right below the cupola). That exhibition is a further development of the exhibition "Fragen an die Deutsche Geschichte" ("Questions to German History"), which has been on display in the Reichstag building from 1971 to 1996; since 1996, the German Cathedral houses the exhibition on German parliamentary history which has already been visited by several million people.

Teil 2 meiner Mini-Serie vom Deutschen Dom. Hier nun der Blick ins Innere des Turms, aufgenommen aus der Hand und in äußerst unbequemer "Nackenstarre"-Position, da die Lumix LX100 leider über kein Schwenk- oder Klappdisplay verfügt. Der Anblick von Sichtbeton in einem Gebäude, das zwischen 1780 und 1785 erbaut wurde, mag zunächst erstaunen, ist aber schlicht der Tatsache geschuldet, dass der Deutsche Dom, der im November 1943 schwer durch einen Luftangriff beschädigt wurde, bei seiner Rekonstruktion in den 1980er-Jahren nur äußerlich originalgetreu wiederhergestellt wurde, in seinem Inneren jedoch modern. Seit 1996 ist der Deutsche Dom auf fünf Ebenen (die oberste Ebene führt die Besucher direkt unter die Kuppel) das Zuhause der Ausstellung "Fragen an die Deutsche Geschichte", die von 1971 bis 1996 im Reichstagsgebäude besichtigt werden konnte. Im Jahre 2002 wurde diese parlamentshistorische Ausstellung des Bundestages weiterentwickelt und läuft im Deutschen Dom seit 2002 unter dem Titel "Wege – Irrwege – Umwege: die Entwicklung der parlamentarischen Demokratie in Deutschland". Wenn Ihr mal in Berlin seid: Auch die Ausstellung lohnt einen Besuch – sie wurde auch bereits von mehreren Millionen Besuchern besichtigt.

#Kaleidoscoping

Another one from what is going to be my new "Kaleidoscoping" series (please see first comment for the first picture of this series). I won't post / create all too many images in this style, and only infrequently, but it's great fun to make these crazy kaleidoscope-style image-flipping "mirror worlds". The single image from which I created this was taken during a spontaneous visit to the Deutscher Dom ("New Church", colloquially known as "German Cathedral", although it isn't a cathedral as such; today it is a museum for German parliamentory history) located on Gendarmenmarkt in the Mitte district at the heart of Berlin. What you see is the roof construction of the room right under the cupola (which can't be visited). In that room you can see architectural models of historical buildings from all parts of Germany that played an important part in German (parliamentary) history. I thought that the roof construction was interesting in its own right and took a few shots handheld (as I didn't have a tripod with me and they aren't allowed in museums anyway), using the exposure bracketing function (three images). Thus not 100 percent sharp, but "OK sharp", I think. In PS, I duplicated the workspace, copied the layer with the original image, and flipped that both horizontally and vertically, and then, in Lightroom, rotated the merged image to the left. The result, for me, looks like the heart of giant "sound machine" or "soundship" (a spaceship fuelled by music). I hope you like it :-)

Ein weiteres "Kaleidoskop"-Bild. Ich werde hier eine kleine Serie erstellen, unregelmäßig, auch nicht zu viele davon, aber es macht einfach großen Spaß, diese surrealen Spiegelwelten zusammenzubauen - wenn es denn das Foto hergibt (im ersten Kommentar findet ihr das erste Bild dieser Art). Dieses Bild habe ich bei einem Spontanbesuch des Deutschen Doms aufgenommen, im Raum direkt unter der Kuppel (die man leider nicht besichtigen kann). Der Deutsche Dom zeigt ja eine Ausstellung zur deutschen Parlamentsgeschichte und in diesem Raum in luftiger Höhe kann man Architekturmodelle von bedeutenden deutschen Bauwerken, die im Zusammenhang dazu stehen, betrachten. Die Stahlkonstruktion des Daches war für sich genommen ebenfalls interessant. Das Ausgangsfoto ist aus der Hand gemacht (ein Stativ hatte ich eh nicht dabei und es wäre auch nicht erlaubt gewesen, eins dort aufzustellen), mit einer Belichtungsreihe aus drei Bildern, nicht 100%ig scharf, weil es nicht besonders hell dort war, aber "OK scharf", finde ich. In Photoshop habe ich erst die Arbeitsfläche vertikal verdoppelt, das Foto dupliziert, dann horizontal und vertikal gespiegelt und in Lightroom das zusammengefügte Bild nach links gedreht. Das Ergebnis sieht für mich wie das Herz einer riesigen Musikmaschine oder eines Musik-angetriebenen Raumschiffs aus.
