...little pixel :)

Actually this was meant for the first Sunday of Advent – yesterday –, but I didn't get around to upload it (and neither to take my MM shot), so this is an unusual Monday contribution, not a macro, but actually a Monday slider. It's also another photo from Hot Pixel Universe, a universe only the LX100 can make visible. You may wonder about the starry sky above the Deutsche Dom (New Church), because stars are usually difficult to see in a brightly illuminated city because of light pollution. Unless you shoot with an LX100, of course ;)

If I remember correctly, long exposure noise reduction had been activated in the camera when I took this photo at the 2018 Festival of Lights. I don't know if that caused the hot pixels, or if the LX100's sensor gets particularly warm during long exposures. The hot pixels are only visible against a totally black sky, not against a blue hour sky, for instance, and especially enhancing the clarity in LR brings them out clearly.

The hot pixels aren't really a big issue, because it's easy to remove them in post. But here I actually liked them, because I think that they add such a festive look to this beautifully illuminated scene, so I decided to leave them in the image. Or rather: I added them back to the photo from an older, already processed version of this shot, because when I re-processed this image just the other day in DXO PhotoLab 5, the amazing DeepPRIME denoising technology detected the hot pixels and removed them. I hope you like Hot Pixel Universe :)

Eigentlich wollte ich dieses Foto gestern zum 1. Advent hochladen, bin aber leider nicht dazu gekommen. Ihr fragt Euch jetzt wahrscheinlich, woher das Sternenmeer kommt, mitten in der Stadt, die zum Festival of Lights sogar noch heller beleuchtet ist als sonst. Nun, es handelt sich hierbei um ein ganz besonderes Universum, das Hot-Pixel-Universum, das nur die LX100 sichtbar machen kann ;)

Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, war damals die Langzeitrauschunterdrückung in der Kamera aktiviert. Ob mir das nun die vielen "Sterne" beschert hat oder der Sensor der LX100 bei Langzeitbelichtungen außergewöhnlich warm wird, kann ich nicht sagen. Ich weiß nur, dass ich sie auch bei einigen anderen Nachtfotos vom Festival of Lights hatte, aber immer nur bei bereits völlig schwarzem Himmel, nie z.B. zur Blauen Stunde, und erst das Verstärken der Klarheit in LR hebt die kleinen Pünktchen so richtig hervor.

Das Entfernen wäre auch keine große Sache, tatsächlich erkennt mittlerweile die Entrauschungstechnologie DeepPRIME in DXO PhotLab 5 diesen Bildfehler so zuverlässig, dass mir das Programm jetzt, als ich das Foto noch einmal neu bearbeitet habe, die Pixel fast sämtlichst entfernt hat. Da sie mir hier aber so gut gefallen haben, weil sie dem Foto so ein weihnachtliches, festliches Strahlen verleihen, habe ich mir die Sternlein aus einer bereits 2018 bearbeiteten Version des Fotos einfach zurückgeholt :) Ich hoffe, Euch gefällt meine kleine "Deutscher Dom unter Sternenmeer"-Spielerei :)

I think I won't have time to visit the Festival of Lights this year, but there are still a few captures from the 2018 festival in my archives, eagerly waiting to be uploaded ;-). This is one of them taken at Potsdamer Platz with the Ritz Carlton Hotel on the left, the P5 Business Center (right), and the entrance to Potsdamer Platz station.

Dieses Jahr habe ich wohl keine Zeit (und auch keine rechte Lust), das Festival of Lights zu besuchen, aber es warten ja noch ein paar Aufnahmen vom 2018er Festival geduldig auf meiner Festplatte darauf, hier gezeigt zu werden ;-) Dieses Foto ist eine davon, aufgenommen am Potsdamer Platz, links im Bild das Ritz Carlton, rechts das P5-Geschäftshaus.

Brandenburg Gate during the Festival of Lights 2018 #1

The first of a small series of captures from the illuminated Brandenburg Gate. Please forgive the weird format, the Pariser Platz was brimful with people on that night, some were moving, many others weren't, and it just didn't look nice, so I decided to crop it.

The Festival of Lights is a city-wide light show. Each year, for the first two weeks of October, many buildings are illuminated from sunset until midnight, some with proper light shows, like the Brandenburg Gate, others with freeze images or just colours.

Processed in Aurora HDR 2019 and LR.

Das erste Foto aus einer kleinen Serie vom illuminierten Brandenburger Tor während des Festivals of Lights 2018. Das etwas komische Format bitte ich zu entschuldigen, der Pariser Platz war rappelvoll an diesem Abend, manche Leute bewegten sich, andere nicht, das sah nicht schön aus. Die anderen Fotos vom Brandenburger Tor werden ein ähnlich "ungewöhnliches" Format haben.

Das Programm des Festivals of Lights (zusammen mit Berlin leuchtet) ist so umfangreich, dass man gar nicht alles schaffen kann. Manche Gebäude werden mit richtigen Lightshows "bespielt", wie das Brandenburger Tor, andere mit Farben oder Standbildern angestrahlt. Da kommen noch mehr Bilder, nicht nur vom Brandenburger Tor... ;-)

Another one taken at the 2018 Festival of Lights, again taken on Potsdamer Platz. Weird angle, I know, but here I was too close to the Kollhoff Tower (the building in the middle) for anything else than a super tilted perspective. On the upside, this helped me to avoid the many people and especially the annoying traffic. The building on the right is the DB Tower (the Deutsche Bahn - German Railway Company - headquarters), the building on the left is the Forum Tower. I don't remember any processing steps at all, as I had already processed the capture one year ago, and it has been asleep on my hard drive ever since - time to wake it up ;-)

In case you wonder about the caption: Einstürzende Neubauten is an experimental / industrial rock band founded in West-Berlin in 1980; one of their trademarks are custom-built instruments made of building tools, and a rather harsh, unwieldy sound.

Noch ein Bild vom 2018er Festival of Lights, wieder vom Potsdamer Platz. Der seltsame Blickwinkel ist der Tatsache geschuldet, dass ich hier viel zu nah dran am Kollhoff-Tower (in der Mitte) war; andererseits konnte ich von dieser Position sowohl die vielen Leute als auch den nervigen Verkehr ausblenden. Links im Bild eine Ecke des Forum Towers, rechts ein Stückchen des DB Towers.

The illuminated Berlin Cathedral during the Festival of Lights. Photowalk with --Conrad-N-- and magritknapp

Taken at the annual Festival of Lights / Berlin leuchtet ("Berlin glows"). Since 2005 every year in October places in the whole city are illumninated after sunset for two weeks. This year more than 70 buildings, squares, and public open spaces were illuminated. Too many to see them all, but this year we actually managed to see at least a few. In my captures from the Brandenburg Gate (please see the first comment for the first upload of a small series) I had decided to crop the people away, but here I decided to leave them in the capture to show some of the atmosphere, and the crazy lights everywhere, too (everywhere translucent plastic orbs / balloons with colourful LED lights inside were sold which was like a small "festival of lights" in its own right).

The Berlin Cathedral (Evangelical Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church) was built between 1894 and 1905 in the architectural style of High Renaissance and Baroque. It is the biggest protestant church building in Berlin and Germany, and houses one of the most
important dynastic burial sites in Europe, the Hohenzollerngruft (Hohenzollern Crypt). The Berlin Cathedral is protected as a historic momument.

Seit 2005 werden während des Festivals of Light - und seit 2013 auch Berlin leuchtet - immer im Oktober zwei Wochen lang nach Sonnenuntergang zahlreiche Gebäude und Plätze in der Stadt mit Farben, Bildern oder Lichtshows illuminiert. Dieses Jahr waren es über 70 verschiedene Orte. Bei Weitem zu viel, um auch nur annähernd alles zu sehen, aber ein paar Orte haben wir 2018 immerhin geschafft. Eigentlich wollten wir hier im Anschluss zum Bebelplatz weiter (ist ja praktisch fast gegenüber), fanden uns aber plötzlich in einer unglaublichen Menschenmenge wieder. Also bogen wir an der Spree flugs nach rechts Richtung Bodemuseum ab, da war es dann nicht ganz so überfüllt.

Anders als bei den Fotos vom Brandenburger Tor (siehe bitte den ersten Kommentar), wo ich die Massen einfach abgeschnitten habe, habe ich mich hier dazu entschlossen, sie im Foto zu lassen, um auch etwas von der Atmosphäre zu zeigen; natürlich wäre der Dom für sich allein wirkungsvoller, zumal durch den Trubel und die vielen bunten Lichter (überall wurden durchsichtige Plastikballons mit bunten LEDs drin verkauft, eine Art Lichterfest im Lichterfest) auch eine gewisse Unruhe noch zusätzlich zum kunterbunten Dom entsteht, aber es war anders nicht zu fotografieren und einfach beschnitten (oder mit dunkler Vignette) sah dieses Foto auch nicht so schön aus.
