An "eye to the sky" at an interesting courtyard of an otherwise unobstrusive business building between Potsdamer Platz and Tempodrom. Taken during a photowalk with Flickr friends back in July 2019. Earlier that year, in March, I had already visited this place on another walk with other Flickr friends, where we'd had fun with performing (and capturing) photographers' "neck pain contortion poses" for each other (please see first comment 😉) – which, ironically, resulted in us being expelled from that courtyard, because we were "photographing people". Indeed, we did, but not strangers, only each other. Two girls photographing each other there in fashion model poses with their phones weren't asked to leave. I've already experienced this in a few places that it brings security or other employees into the scene when they see several people with cameras in the same spot. It once even happened at a shopping mall where we had specifically asked the employee at the information desk at the mall's entrance whether it's OK to take photos there, and the answer had been "Yes!" even regarding the – considerate (of course...) – use of tripods. But when we did just that it didn't take long and a security guard showed up and told us that "It's not allowed to take photos!" – when at the same time several people next to us were taking photos with their phones. Contradictions...

Happy Window Wednesday and Happy Hump Day, Everyone!

Ein "Auge zum Himmel" im interessant gestalteten Hinterhof eines ansonsten eher unauffälligen Geschäftshauses zwischen Potsdamer Platz und Tempodrom, aufgenommen bei einem Fotowalk mit Flickr-Freunden im Juli letzten Jahres. Im März 2019 war ich schon einmal mit anderen Flickr-Freunden dort gewesen, wo wir uns den Spaß gemacht hatten, füreinander in "Fotografen-Nackenstarre-Position" dort auf dem Rondell direkt in der Mitte des Innenhofes zu posieren – was prompt zu unserem Rausschmiss führte, weil wir "andere Leute fotografiert" hätten. Hatten wir, aber doch nur uns selbst und niemanden sonst (siehe Foto im ersten Kommentar 😉). Zwei junge Frauen, die dort füreinander Modell standen und sich mit ihren Handys fotografierten, wurden nicht aufgefordert, den Hof zu verlassen. Ich habe das jetzt schon das eine oder andere Mal erlebt, dass mehrere Leute mit Kameras offenbar gerne den Sicherheitsdienst oder andere Mitarbeiter auf den Plan rufen (und es war bei keiner dieser Gelegenheiten so, dass wir uns irgendwie daneben benommen hätten). Einmal sogar in einem großen Einkaufszentrum auch in der Nähe des Potsdamer Platzes, wo wir sogar noch den Mitarbeiter am Infoschalter direkt am Eingang ausdrücklich um Fotografieerlaubnis gebeten und diese auch bekommen hatten, sogar, was die – rücksichtsvolle (was sonst) – Benutzung von Stativen anbelangte. Als wir aber genau das taten, dauerte es nicht lange, bis ein Mitarbeiter der Haussicherheit auftauchte und uns erklärte, dass das Fotografieren nicht erlaubt sei – während neben uns einige Leute munter mit ihren Handys fotografierten. Widersprüche...

I somehow couldn't come up with a more apt title. Of course this is not paper, and nothing's been folded here, but especially the reverse stairs – which quasi also act as a "clamp" that seems to hold together all seven floors of that building – remind me of a "folding game" like Origami. Just like those two square, colourful design elements which, for me, also have a certain 1950s (or 1980s) touch. But maybe I also originally had one those foldable / expandable (table) music stands in mind. Something that, if you wish, you can fold inside or outside, simply every which way, even if it then becomes unusable for its original purpose, at least until you fold it back the way it was meant to be. This is the right staircase of the Paul-Löbe-Haus (PLH), a parliamentary building of the German Bundestag. The PLH houses offices for the members of the German parliament and their employees. It was opened in 2001, and forms an architectural unit with the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders Haus and the Bundeskanzleramt (please see my album "Berliner Regierungsviertel / Berlin government district" if you like). Taken with my Lumix LX100 at a walk with Flickr friends back in July 2018. The LX100 is the only camera that I ever use to shoot 16:9 images with, because of its unique so-called "multi-aspect sensor" which doesn't crop the field of view at least for 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios (1:1 is an exception), whereas the Olympus cameras simply crop the image in-camera, and I'd rather do that myself later if I wish. The different aspect ratios are also easily accessible via a dial on top of the LX100's fixed lens.

Regarding the sliders I sort of "drifted along" while checking out different filters such as LUTs in ON1. I also completely desaturated the yellow and orange tones – we had been there to take blue hour photos, and the PLH's illumination created a distinctive yellow hue on the concrete wall which I didn't like too much. Monochrome processing had been an option, too, but in the end I preferred the colour version. You can find a fantastic b&w version on Moni E's stream. Politisches Origami

Ein besserer Titel wollte mir hier einfach nicht einfallen. Obwohl, solch Origami-mäßig komplizierte Kniffe soll es ja im Politikbetrieb durchaus geben, selbst wenn am Ende kein hübsches Origami-Gebilde dabei herauskommt ;-) Jdf. erinnern mich sowohl die gegenläufigen Treppen als auch die leicht 50er(oder auch 80er)-Jahre-Design-mäßig geformten farbigen Designelemente des Paul-Löbe-Hauses (PLH) an Origami. Vielleicht hatte ich bei der Treppe aber auch ein Tisch-Scherenpult oder auch einen regulären Notenständer im Sinn, jdf. irgendetwas Ein- und Ausfaltbares, das ich aber nicht genau benennen kann. Egal ;-) Dies ist eine Aufnahme mit meiner kleinen LX100, entstanden bei einem Fotowalk mit Flickr-Freuden im Juli 2018. Die LX100 ist die einzige Kamera, mit der ich überhaupt direkt 16:9-Fotos mache. Die Olys beschneiden das Bild nur in der Kamera – und das mache ich, wenn gewünscht, lieber später bei der Bearbeitung selbst. Die LX100 verfügt aber über einen sog. "Multiformat-Sensor", der zumindest in den Formaten 4:3, 3:2 und eben 16:9 immer dieselbe Bilddiagonale nutzt (die Ausnahme ist 1:1). Außerdem befindet sich bei der LX100 auch ein praktischer Direktauswahlschalter für die Formate direkt auf dem festverbauten Objektiv.

Als wir zur blauen Stunde am Kanzleramt ankamen, waren die Gebäude dort schon beleuchtet, so auch das PLH, und die Beleuchtung erzeugte dort einen zumindest auf meinem Bild unschön aussehenden Gelbton auf der Betonwand, weshalb ich kurzerhand sowohl die Gelb- als auch die Orangetöne völlig entsättigt habe. Eine monochrome Bearbeitung hatte ich auch ausprobiert, am Ende gefiel mir aber diese verfremdete Farbversion besser. Eine ganz tolle SW-Version findet Ihr bei Moni E. Nicht wundern, weder Monis noch mein Bild ist gespiegelt, beim PLH befinden sich zu beiden Seiten der Eingangshalle diese von außen dank Komplettverglasung sichtbaren Treppenaufgänge.

7DWF, Monday: Anything Goes

Surprisingly empty upper platforms at Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) on a beautiful summer evening. Believe it or not, Berlin Hauptbahnhof is the largest train station in Europe, with approximately 300 000 travellers per day, making it the 4th most frequented train station in Germany (after Hamburg, Munich, and Frankfurt/Main). Or the least frequented, at least on a Saturday evening at 19:39 o' clock. Well, the next train to Zurich from platform 13 wasn't due until 21:04. At least there was a lonely dove, an employee of the Deutsche Bahn AG (in the red hat), shuffling along the platform, and a guy who organized his luggage. And us: Sabine.R, marionrosengarten, --Conrad-N-- and H. Roebke :-)

Bemerkenswerte Leere am ehemaligen Lehrter Bahnhof (seit 2006 Berlin Hauptbahnhof) an einem sonnigen Samstagabend um 19:39 Uhr. Der nächste Zug nach Zürich ging von Gleis 13 aber auch erst um 21:04 Uhr. Immerhin schlurfte ein Mitarbeiter der Deutschen Bahn auf Gleis 13 entlang, ein einsamer Passagier ordnete sein Gepäck, und die nicht minder einsame Taube hatte somit den Bahnsteig fast für sich. Aber wir waren ja auch noch da: Sabine.R, marionrosengarten, --Conrad-N-- and H. Roebke :-)

Another one from the great photowalk with Flickr friends in Berlin in Juli. Taken at Potsdamer Platz. When I looked up I saw the airplane and its vapour trail, and the jet trail was getting in line with the spire of the building. I was a bit too late, because, stupidly, at first I had just watched the scene for a while, then I thought "This could actually make a nice photo if I manage to get vapour trail and building top in one line" and by the time I had my camera ready (hours later, so to say), the opportunity was almost gone. Or, rather, had flown way. Almost ;-) I was tempted to photoshop the image and align the vapour trail exactly with the top of the building, but then decided against it. The scene is as shot. I flipped the image, which I had originally taken in portrait mode, horizontally, though, because I think it looks nicer that way. Processed in Aurora HDR and in Luminar.

Dear Flickr friends, I have internet problems at the moment. I'm always behind on Flickr, but right now I'm particularly sluggish with commenting, answering comments and/or faving (or even just see) your latest uploads, because my connection is sluggish in the evenings. I assure you it's not because I have lost interest in your work. I hope that soon everything will be back to normal, and I'll try to catch up with you then.

Auf die Spitze getrieben. Fast.

Noch eins vom schönen Fotowalk mit Flickr-Freunden in Berlin im Juli, aufgenommen am Potsdamer Platz. Ich habe mehr durch Zufall hoch geschaut und gesehen, dass der Kondensstreifen des Flugzeugs, das gerade über den Platz flog, je nach meiner Position, eine Linie mit der Spitze des 70 Meter hohen Forum Towers (entworfen vom italienischen Star-Architekten Renzo Piano) bildete. Anstatt gleich zur Kamera zu greifen, habe ich erst eine Weile zugeschaut, mir dabei gedacht, dass das eigentlich ein gutes Motiv abgeben könnte, und als ich dann, gefühlte Stunden später, endlich die Kamera parat hatte, war die Gelegenheit schon fast vorüber(-geflogen). Zum Glück nur fast. Ich habe beim Bearbeiten kurz mit dem Gedanken gespielt, den Kondensstreifen in Photoshop leicht zu versetzen, um ihn exakt mit der Turmspitze auf eine Linie zu bringen, mich dann aber dagegen entschieden. Die Szene ist so, wie ich sie fotografiert habe. Ich habe lediglich das ursprünglich hochkant aufgenommene Foto nach links gedreht, weil ich es so schöner finde. Enwickelt in Aurora HDR und Luminar.

Noch eins: Ich habe momentan Probleme mit meiner Internetverbindung, besonders am Abend. Das heißt also, dass ich noch mehr als sonst hinterherhinke beim Kommentieren und besternen Eurer neuen Fotos. Das ist keinesfalls Desinteresse. Ich hoffe, dass bald alles wieder vernünftig läuft.
