"Old but gold", one could say of this archive image with the classic view of Berlin's Olympiastadion (Olympic stadium). The sky certainly was golden because on that day back in September 2020 we had an amazing sunset (and an almost empty stadium since those were the pandemic days). In this view, you can't see much of the Olympiastadion's modern roof so this is probably almost exactly the view the visitors of the Olympic games of 1936 might have had back in those dark days.

Looking closely, you can see a dude, two ladies, and a person on a motorbike on the right. They were practicing some bike stunts. The forecourt of the Olympic Stadium seems to be a popular spot for drivers, bikers, and such to enhance their driving skills – as long as there are no events at the stadium.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, dear Flickr friends! HSS!

Laowa C-Dreamer 7.5mm F/2

A capture taken back in 2020 on a rare photo outing while the pandemic was in full swing. The latter is also the reason why the Olympic Stadium (Olympiastadion) in Berlin had been almost completely empty on that sunny September day. Not that it is ever crowded on a quiet day without any events (apart from sports events like football, or the recent Special Olympics World Games this June, the Olympiastadion also is a popular venue for concerts), but on regular visitor days (in normal times) there are always larger visitor groups or school classes around so there also is a constant level of sound from the voices. But on that day it had been completely quiet – until, just when we were about to wrap it up and leave, we noticed a fairly big group of children and teenagers gathering among a few rows of seats. And after a while, they started to sing – it was an outdoor choir rehearsal ;) Since I have already shared this story with you some time ago, please check the photo in the first comment where you can see the choir; there's also more info about that rehearsal in the description of that photo.

Unlike the (very colourful) photo in the first comment, this version looks best in monochrome. I can only guess that it's the different POV I had used for this image (in which the stadium's roof almost reminds me of an opened oyster shell or an UFO) – not centered but slightly from the side – but it simply didn't work that well in colour, it even looked a little random. However, I still couldn't resist to re-add a little bit of colour to bring back some of the beautiful sunshine we*d had on that day ;) So one might call this a "colorized monochrome" ;)

Wishing you a happy Wednesday (aka Hump Day) and a sunny rest of the week!

#MonochromeThursday

An oldie from Berlin's Olympiastadion. Every time I flip through my LR catalogue and stumble upon these Olympic Stadium images from 2018, I think "There are a few nice ones from that walk", then I go on and forget about them because I stumble upon other "nice" older images that I might still upload. And the images from that August 2018 photowalk return to their deep slumber... So as not to forget about them for yet another year I spontaneously decided to upload one that looks good in b&w, because today it's (Monochrome) Thursday.

August 2018 had been very hot and sunny, and sunny means interesting-looking shadows as you can see here at the Olympic Stadium's ground floor gallery. The shadow lettering says "Unterring" (lower gallery) and "Oberring" (upper gallery). I was also lucky that three visitors happened to appear at the gallery and walked away from me, so it was easy to add some "human factor" to the scene without the risk of being busted ;)

This photo has been waiting on my hard drive readily processed. All I did today in addition to that was to add just a hint of warmth with the Reflector Efex (soft gold) filter in Color Efex which also helped to slightly brighten the gallery's ceiling.

Happy Monochrome Thursday, Everyone!

#3 of my mini series from work at the Olympiastadion Berlin. You can find #2 in the fifth comment (I was too slow), and if you take a closer look at the previous image, you can also see the barrier tape in that photo. The worker on the cherry picker was doing something (I never found out what) on the ceiling of the upper collonade. I have photoGRIIIphed him up there as well, but I might postpone that (and more) image(s) from the Olympiastadion until next year. Since Christmas season will start with the first of Advent in only a week (time flies, just like the barrier tape in this shot), I think I will upload a few Christmassy- or festive-looking images now, images that I've wanted to upload for ages (previous December, December before previous December), but somehow never did ;)

HSS, Everyone!

Nr. 3 meiner kleinen "Arbeits"serie vom Berliner Olympiastadion.

One of many staircases at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin that lead inside the stadium and to the galleries, and an example of the original 1936 architecture. Photographed with the Ricoh GRIII.

The final result is kind of my own interpretation and combination of two of the quite many in-camera Jpg film presets: "Bleach Bypass" and the rather popular "High Contrast BW". While both presets had yielded nice, interesting Jpgs – Bleach Bypass did a great job with the facade's (which is made of Franconian Muschelkalk / shelly limestone) texture and patterns, while High Contrast BW created a very dramatic, dark and moody image –, I still had not been 100 percent happy with either: I didn't like the way the camera had processed the colours in the Bleach Bypass mode, and the High Contrast BW mode had smudged the fine details quite considerably. But since I luckily had set the camera to record both Jpg and Raw I was able to process the Raw file so that it now has the drama and moodiness of the High Contrast BW, and also the details of Bleach Bypass.

By now I've long returned to shooting Raw only with the Ricoh; it saves battery life (the tiny GRIII has an equally tiny and therefore not particularly long-lasting battery), and if I wish I can still apply one of the in-camera film presets to the Raw file later. But actually I prefer to do my own processing :)
