Only a few weeks before it's... tulip time again :) Hooray! As a teaser, here's a sunny tulip from 2019 which I've photographed at the Tulipan flower show at the Britzer Garten, Berlin's most beautiful public park. The lens responsible for this crazy bokeh is my vintage OM Zuiko Auto-S 50mm F1.4 lens. Judging from the "wild" bokeh shapes I must have taken this wide open. Stopped down a little, the bokeh becomes a tad more civilized before the bokeh balls turn into nice-looking "diamonds" at around F4.

Over the past few years, I have collected so many tulip photos from Britz alone that one might say it's enough for a lifetime, but on the other hand, you can't ever photograph too many flowers, tulips included, can you? Right :) So will I visit this year's Tulipan? You bet I will ;)

OM Zuiko 50mm Auto-S F/1.4

Couldn't think of a witty title for this image, so I decided to upload it for Labour Day :-) I know that the symbolic flower for Labour Day is a red carnation, but it's tulip time, and at least this is a red tulip ;-)

Taken with my vintage OM Zuiko 50mm Auto-S F/1.4 at "Tulipan", an annual tulip show at the Britzer Garten, a huge public park in Berlin. This is kind of an "aperture stacking". At F1.4 the lens creates some very beautiful (methinks) bokeh, but it is also still very soft. So the background you see here is from the photo taken at F1.4, and the blossom from the shot taken at F2 or F2.8. Unfortunately I didn't get the idea for a manual bracketing right there, I could have captured the blossom much sharper by setting a higher aperture value, but I was thinking in "single images", and I wanted bokeh, so there it is. Stacked / blended / masked in Photoshop, then processed in Luminar 3 for that extra crispness of the blossom (detail enhancer) and a punchier green for the background (green / foliage enhancer).

Ich weiß, dass die Symbolblume für den Maifeiertag eigentlich die rote Nelke ist, aber ich hatte gerade keine zur Hand und es ist Tulpenzeit. Immerhin ist dies eine rote Tulpe ;-)

Aufgenommen mit meinem manuellen OM Zuiko 50mm Auto-S F/1.4 bei einem Besuch der jährlichen Tulpenschau im Britzer Garten, der "Tulipan". Das Bild ist so eine Art "Blenden-Stacking". Das alte 50er Zuiko hat bei Offenblende ein sehr schönes Bokeh, finde ich, ist aber auch noch sehr weich. Ich habe daher zwei Bilder in Photoshop zusammengefügt; den Hintergrund habe ich mit F1.4 aufgenommen, die Blüte selbst mit F2 oder F2.8. Leider kam mir die Idee für eine manuelle Belichtungsreihe nicht schon vor Ort, dort hatte ich in Einzelbildern gedacht und weil ich in jedem Fall Bokeh für das Bild wollte, habe ich keine Aufnahmen mit weiter geschlossener Blende gemacht. Die Blüte wäre dann sicher richtig scharf geworden. Nun ja, beim nächsten Mal. Wenn ich daran denke ;-)

Testing the 50mm Zuiko MC Auto-S F1.4 seriously for the first time on a stroll around the corner. I've bought this old, cheap OM-System lens years ago, but never used it on the Pen E-PL3, because it never felt comfortable to handle on a camera this small (it always felt more like a lens with a "grip").

While editing this, an old song came to my mind: Blaze's "Love Is Forever" from their excellent album "25 Years Later" (1990). Since these two hearts look slightly battered (I suppose these are balloons), I think a song this old is appropriate. Erste ernsthafte Versuche mit dem Zuiko MC Auto-S F1.4 (für das OM-System) bei einem Spaziergang ums Eck. Preiswert gekauft bereits 2011, erwies es sich an der kleinen Pen E-PL3 als sehr unhandlich (Objektiv mit Griff), weshalb ich es zuvor nie richtig ausprobiert habe. Umso erfreulicher jetzt die Ergebnisse an der OM-D. Hier ein erstes Foto, weitere werden folgen.

Beim Bearbeiten ging mir ein sehr alter Song von Blaze durch den Kopf, "Love Is Forever", von ihrem exzellenten Album "25 Years Later" (1990). Weil die beiden (Ballon-)Herzen am Zaun schon recht mitgenommen aussehen, passt so ein alter Song, finde ich. Wer mal reinhören möchte: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E7fXuDAsuA .
