Another one from the gym at the Olympic Village of 1936 in Elstal 10 km west of Berlin. Looking back, I realise how lucky we were to visit the place back in September 2018 because that was the last year guided tours through the remains of the historic Olympic Village were still possible. Nowadays, the area has been developed into "G.O.L.D. – Gartenstadt Olympisches Dorf von 1936“ (STRG/CTRL+ gold1936.berlin/), a new home for 3,000 people of which the first construction phase has been completed at the end of 2022. I should admit that I find the name "Gold 1936" a little problematic, given the fact that the Olympic Village had been destined as barracks for the Deutsche Wehrmacht in the war that was to come three years later from day one of its planning. On the other hand one cannot by any means attest "historical amnesia" to the developers of the new village; quite the contrary, there are museal areas in the new village that inform about the controversial history of that place and the Olympic Games of 1936.

I couldn't find any info about today's condition of the gym that you can see here. I hope that it will be reconstructed and modernised like the equally heritage-protected natatorium, and the house where Jesse Owens lived during the Games. The coloured glass wall alone would be worth it. If you zoom in, you can vaguely see a photo of Jesse Owens on the wall on the left (the second image from above on the film strip). Unfortunately, the details are a little smudgy. As I had mentioned earlier, I did not bring a tripod along because I thought we weren't allowed to, so I took all images freehand. Plus the fact that back then the little LX100, which this image was taken with, had been still new, and I had by no means mastered all its functions (such as bracketing), yet. Before I continue my casual series of the Berlin Olympic Stadium, here's another photo from my visit to the Olympic Village of 1936 with 3-day-beard / 3-tage-bart, bananahh, and magritknapp.

Heavily (over-)processed for Sliders Sunday. It shows the Olympic Village's gym. I wish it were possible to re-visit the Olympic Village (or what is left of it) with a tripod and a wider lens, but guided tours have been discontinued in 2020 – not because of the Corona/Covid-19 situation, but because the site of the Olympic Village is under (re-)construction as a housing area called "G.O.L.D. Gartenstadt Olympisches Dorf von 1936®" ("Gold Garden City Olympic Village of 1936"). So actually we were very, very lucky to still have gotten hold of a tour back in September 2018 – a once-in-a-lifetime photographic opportunity. It also means that I have to make do with the photographic yield achieved mostly with my little Lumix LX100 (and without a tripod, because I thought that I couldn't bring one – a stupid mistake).

In 2018 the Lumix had still been new and I hadn't figured out all the functions properly, yet (well, I still haven't); this image would have definitely benefited from the use of the HDR bracketing mode, but it simply hadn't been on my radar back then. So this image also was the ultimate test for the new DxO Photo Lab 4: an image with obvious flaws such as lots of noise and mushy details. DxO PL 4 has a new AI de-noising technology called "Deep Prime" (which only works with RAW files, so make sure to process the file in DxO first before you export it to LR). And I must say that I'm quite impressed. Since this image is obviously more about atmosphere than image quality I also added a subtle HDR look in HDR Efex (preset "End of the road" tweaked to my liking and blended in with the original file in PS at 79 % opacity); I like the soft glow and slightly painterly look HDR Efex added to it. I hope you like it, too, and that you can forgive the poor all-over image quality :)

And speaking of atmosphere: The photo board in the background displays original images from the Olympic Summer Games of 1936 – and the image on the far right is a portrait of Jesse Owens, the athlete who dominated the games of '36. This, the lifetime friendship he had built with German long jumper Luz Long (Long was fatally injured during WWII in 1943, but the Owens and Long families have stayed in contact to this day), and the fact Jesse Owens also was the undisputed crowd favourite, publicly reduced the ugly racist ideology of the Nazi regime to absurdity – alas, as we all know, only for those two summer weeks of 1936...

Bevor es mit meiner losen Serie von Berliner Olympiastadion weitergeht, streue ich für den Sliders Sunday ein weiteres Foto vom Olympischen Dorf in Elstal ein. Da die (geführten) Touren dort leider eingestellt wurden (nicht etwa wegen der Corona-Situation, sondern weil mittlerweile die Bauarbeiten für die neue Wohnanlage "G.O.L.D. Gartenstadt Olympisches Dorf von 1936®" weiter fortgeschritten sind), war der Besuch dort (zusammen mit 3-day-beard / 3-tage-bart, bananahh, and magritknapp) tatsächlich eine einmalige fotografische Gelegenheit – und das bedeutet auch, dass ich mit den Fotos vorliebnehmen muss, die ich damals überwiegend mit meiner kleinen Lumix LX100 (und blöderweise ohne Stativ, weil ich dachte, ich dürfte keins mitbringen) gemacht habe.

Insbesondere diese Aufnahme hätte sicher von der Verwendung des HDR-Belichtungsreihen-Modus profitiert, aber da die Kamera damals noch recht neu war, hatte ich diese Feinheiten noch nicht auf dem Schirm gehabt. Das Resultat ist, insbesondere hier, sicher eindeutig mehr unter Atmosphäre denn unter Bildqualität einzuordnen. Eine Einzelaufnahme, bei der aufgrund der schwierigen Lichtverhältnisse in der Turnhalle des Olympischen Dorfes die dunklen Bereiche nach dem Aufhellen reichlich verrauscht sowie nur noch mit spärlichen Details versehen waren. Da konnte sich dann gleich mal das gerade erschienene DxO Photo Lab 4 beweisen. Und ich finde, das Resultat kann sich durchaus sehen lassen, wenn man ein Auge zudrückt ;) DxO hat das brandneue KI-Entrauschungstool "Deep Prime" an Bord, das tatsächlich mit zu dem Besten zählt, was es momentan in diesem Bereich gibt (wie z.B. Topaz DeNoise AI, das auch hervorragende Arbeit leistet, aber DxO legt hier noch einmal eine Schippe drauf). "Deep Prime" funktioniert übrigens nur mit den originalen RAW-Dateien, sodass man den Workflow entsprechend anpassen muss: Die (Vor-)Entwicklung in DxO muss der erste Schritt sein, erst danach kann man z.B. in LR oder anderen Programmen weitermachen.

Hier habe ich das Foto nach den grundlegenden Anpassungen nur noch in HDR Efex nachberabeitet, ausgehend vom Preset "Ende der Straße" (zu finden unter "Surreal"), das ich noch angepasst habe und anschließend mit dem Originalbild in PS mit 79 % Deckkraft überblendet habe. Also, wie gesagt, seid bitte bzgl. Bildqualität / Details / Schärfe dieses Mal nicht ganz so streng :)

Apropos Atmosphäre: Die Fotowand im Hintergrund zeigt Originalbilder der Spiele von 1936 – und ganz rechts seht Ihr ein Portrait von Jesse Owens, dem unangefochtenen Star der Spiele. Die sportliche Überlegenheit Jesse Owens', die Freundschaft mit dem deutschen Weitsprung-Star Luz Long (die übrigens bis heute von beiden Familien gepflegt wird, auch wenn Long bereits 1943 im Krieg tödlich verwundet wurde) sowie die Tatsache, dass Owens der absolute Publikumsliebling war, führten damals die hässliche Nazi-Rassentheorie öffentlich ad absurdum. Aber, wie wir alle wissen, leider nur während jener zwei Wochen im Sommer 1936...

Walk with 3-day-beard / 3-tage-bart (thank you for organising this!), bananahh, and magritknapp at the Olympic Village of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. It's not a typical lost place, as one can't explore it by oneself. There are short guided tours, and much of the area has been sold to investors already (and many buidings are destroyed). Not the gym, however. As our nice and well-informed guide told us, we could still buy it, if we were interested in an old, decayed gym ;-)

The Olympic Village, located 18 kilometres west of Berlin, was designed by Walter and Werner March and built between 1934 and 1936. Even though the Olympic Village was officially labelled "Village of Peace" by the NS authorities, it was designed as barracks for the Wehrmacht from the very start. The building which housed the refectory and kitchens ("40 refectories / kitchens for 40 nations"), for instance, was designed as a hospital and was rebuilt for this originally planned purpose right after the ending of the '36 Summer Olympics.

Processed mostly in Aurora HDR. I wish I had brought a tripod (stupid!), because epecially here at the gym bracketing would have been very useful. Especially the shadows appear rather grainy after brightening them in LR.

Das Olympische Dorf von 1936 kann man nicht auf eigene Faust erkunden. Ein Teil des Geländes ist bereits verkauft, es sollen dort Wohnhäuser entstehen. Viele Gebäude existieren auch nicht mehr. Die Turnhalle, in der dieses Foto entstanden ist, steht aber noch zum Verkauf.

Das Olympische Dorf wurde von Walter und Werner March entworfen und zwischen 1934 und '36 erbaut. Entgegen der offiziellen NS-Bezeichnung "Dorf des Friedens" wurde es von Anfang an als Kaserne für die Wehrmacht konzipiert und auch gebaut. Das nicht mehr zugängliche Gebäude, das Küchen und Speisesäle beherbergte ("40 Küchen für 40 Nationen") war z.B. als Krankenhaus geplant und wurde gleich nach dem Ende der Sommerspiele entsprechend umgebaut.

Ich hatte dummerweise kein Stativ mit. Hier in der Turnhalle hätte sich sicher eine Belichtungsreihe gut gemacht, so sind insbesondere die Schatten, die ich nachträglich in LR aufgehellt habe, ziemlich verrauscht. Ansonsten habe ich das Foto überwiegend in Aurora HDR entwickelt.

Natatorium / indoor swimming gym at the Olympic Village of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Most of the buildings on the site of the former Olympic Village in Elstal (near of Berlin) are destroyed. The indoor swimming pool / gym, however, has been partially renovated in 2011 after severe arson (the exterior walls only, including the windows with, in the 1930s, one of the most modern and advanced constructions, some of which you can see on the left). It is planned to turn it into a museum, as the indoor swimming pool was intended purely for training purposes, non-swimmer areas (e.g. for children) were not intended. The remaining area of the Olympic Village has, mostly, been sold to investors who are planning on building apartment and one-family houses there.

Walking around the natatorium was fun, since it came closest to exploring an abandoned place on your own. The site of the Olympic Village can only be visited during a guided tour of about two hours. At the swimming gym we had about half an hour to walk around on our own, sort of "urbexing light". Taken handheld with my little compact MFT camera-gem, the Lumix-LX100.

Trainingsschwimmhalle im Olympischen Dorf (Elstal / Brandenburg) der Sommerspiele 1936 in Berlin. Die Schwimmhalle ist eines der wenigen noch erhaltenen Gebäude des Olympischen Dorfes. Nach schwerer Brandstiftung wurden die Außenwände inklusive der - mit einer der damals modernsten und innovativesten (Hebe-)Techniken (teilweise links zu sehen) ausgestatteten - Fenster im Jahr 2011 restauriert. Es ist geplant, die Schwimmhalle in ein Museum umzuwandeln. Ursprüngliche Pläne für eine Therme oder ein Erlebnisbad für die Bewohner der auf dem Gelände geplanten Ein- und Mehrfamilienhäuser sowie das weitere Dallgower Einzugsgebiet wurden vorerst verworfen, da es schwierig werden dürfte, die unter Denkmalschutz stehende Halle modernen Erfordernissen anzupassen, da die Halle damals rein zu Trainingszwecken erbaut worden war und es dementsprechend nur das eine große Becken, aber keinerlei Bereiche für Kinder und Nichtschwimmer gibt.

In der Schwimmhalle hatten wir für gut eine halbe Stunde Gelegenheit zu Erkundungen auf eigene Faust. Das Olympische Dorf kann ja nur im Rahmen einer 2-stündigen Führung besucht werden, und so war die Besichtigung der Schwimmhalle ein bisschen "Urbexing light" und hat großen Spaß gemacht. Basketball backboard minus the basket which most likely went missing long ago. Taken at the gym at the Olympic Village of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Elstal near Berlin. As I wrote earlier (please see the images in my first comment), this was "urbex light". You can't explore the Olympic Village on your own, but only by taking a guided tour (approximately 2 hours). The plate (please zoom in) says "Historisches Sportgerät. Bitte nicht berühren." (Historical Sports Equipment. Please Don't Touch.)

Taken handheld (I was stupid enough to leave my tripod at home because I thought I wouldn't be allowed to use it there), so not 100 percent sharp, but I think that the magnificent play of light, which the sun, in combination with the colourful windows, bestowed on us that day, makes up for the slight unsharpness.

Basketball-Board ohne Korb, der schon vor langer Zeit abhanden gekommen sein dürfte. Aufgenommen in der Trainingshalle des Olympischen Dorfes der Sommerspiele von 1936 in Elstal bei Berlin. Wie ich schon bei einem anderen Upload vom Olympischen Dorf schrieb (siehe Fotos im ersten Kommentar), war dies sozusagen "Urbexen light", da man das Olympische Dorf nicht auf eigene Faust erkunden kann, sondern nur im Rahmen einer etwa 2-stündigen Führung. Wenn Ihr ranzoomt, könnt Ihr lesen, was auf dem kleinen Schild dort steht :-)

Aus der Hand fotografiert, weil ich blöderweise dachte, ich dürfte dort kein Stativ verwenden und ich es deshalb zu Hause gelassen hatte (ist ja nicht so, dass wir nicht mit dem Auto dort gewesen wären; Stichwort: Kofferraum). Deshalb leicht unscharf, aber ich denke, dass das grandiose Lichtspiel, das uns die Sonne und die bunten Fenster der Halle an diesem Tag bescherten, die leichte Unschärfe locker wieder wettmacht.
