And fun with the Lensbaby for #sliderssunday :)

First outing with the LB SOL 22. I thought the Botanical Garden would be the perfect place to check this lens out in real-life conditions, because it's nearby and I've been there so often before, with various cameras / lenses, so I thought a photowalk with the Lensbaby would allow me to capture some new aspects. It did, and it's also such fun to use :) I'd also brought the GR III along, so I have a "clean" version of this couple chilling in front of the greenhouses. I'll upload that photo, too, maybe already for Monochrome Thursday next week.

The pose of this young couple had caught my eye, and also the fact that they were playing around with a real camera, not their phones. I was also a little afraid that they might notice me, as I usually only photograph people in candid situations when they are far enough away or have their backs turned on me, so I acted as if I was interested in the greenhouses only ;) Since you can see a little bit of the guy's face, I've added some motion blur to it in PS, just to make sure one can't recognize him. The couple could have been better in focus, but I think there's enough sharpness to make the scenery pleasant to look at (and the GR III image is sharp all over).

Erster "Feldversuch" mit dem Lensbaby SOL 22. Der Botanische Garten war der perfekte Ort, um dieses ungewöhnliche Objektiv auszuprobieren. Er ist leicht zu erreichen und ich war schon so oft dort gewesen, immer mit anderen Objektiven oder auch Kameras, da konnte ich mit dem Lensbaby nach Herzenslust herumprobieren, ohne Sorge haben zu müssen, "das" Foto zu verpassen. Das Objektiv ist sicherlich nichts für jeden Tag, macht aber großen Spaß, auch wenn man sich in die Bedienung erst reinfuchsen muss.

Da ich auch die GR III dabei hatte, gibt es von dieser Szene zwei Versionen – diese leicht verschwurbelte und ein "sauberes", scharfes "Streetfoto", das ich Euch demnächst auch noch zeigen werde. Normalerweise fotografiere ich Szenen, bei denen mir fremde Menschen eine Hauptrolle spielen, nur, wenn diese weit genug von mir weg sind oder mir den Rücken zukehren. Hier aber fand ich die Synchron-Liegepose dieses Pärchens einfach zu charmant, um das Foto nicht zu machen. Ich hatte aber schon etwas Sorge, dass sie mich bemerken würden, deshalb tat ich so, als würden mich einzig die Gewächshäuser interessieren ;) Da man hier ein bisschen vom Gesicht des Mannes (er beschäftigt sich mit einer Kamera, nicht etwa mit dem Handy!) sehen kann, habe ich seinem Gesicht in PS ein wenig Bewegungsunschärfe verpasst – sicher ist sicher. Auf dem Ricoh-Foto (auf dem die beiden liegetechnisch sogar noch mehr Synchronität zeigen) sieht man die Gesichter gar nicht, und das ist mir auch immer am liebsten ;)

As autumn is definitely around the corner, here's some colourful memory of early summer, taken at the Botanical Garden back in June on a photowalk with Sabine.R.

The Laowa ultra wide-angle lens tends to produce some really strong, sometimes a little harsh colours, so I hit the HSL sliders in LR to get a better colour balance and all-over warmer touch, then went into ON1 Photo Raw, where I applied the HDR filter ("Glow"), next an extra non-HDR "Glow" filter for a softer look (method "darken"), and an ever so slight split tone effect. Then into Aurora HDR for some very subtle HDR sliding, and finally into Luminar 3, where I enhanced a few very small details (like the flower pots lining the flower bed / lawn leading up to the Main Tropical Greenhouse).

The beginnings of the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum date back as far as 1573 and to the "Pleasure and Kitchen Garden" of the Berlin Palace, then located on the grounds of what is now the "Lustgarten" ("pleasure garden") area in the Berlin-Mitte district. In 1679 - the official "year of birth" of the Botanical Garden and Museum -, when the aforementioned kitchen garden had become too small, the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm commissioned a modern agricultural garden in the (then) outskirts of Berlin, along Potsdamer Straße (today the Kleistpark area of Berlin-Schöneberg). The excessive growth of Berlin (but also the growth of the Botanical Garden itself) at the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century again made it necessary to consider a relocation of the garden. Between 1888 and 1910 it was finally moved to its permanent location in (Berlin-)Dahlem. The Main Tropical Greenhouse, which you can (partly) see in this photo, was built between 1905 and 1907 and is, to this date and with a length of 60 m and a height of 23 m (198,85 x 75,45 feet), still one of the largest steel-glass-structures in the world.

Die Anfänge des Botanischen Gartens und Museums Berlin reichen bis ins Jahr 1573 zurück, auch wenn der damalige "Lust- und Küchengarten" des Berliner Stadtschlosses noch nicht so bezeichnet wurde. Als besagter Garten, der sich auf dem Gelände des heutigen Lustgartens in Berlin-Mitte (gegenüber dem neuen Stadtschloss/Humboldtforum) befand, langsam aus allen Nähten (oder besser Beeten) zu platzen drohte, beauftragte der damalige Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm die Verlegung des Gartens vor die Tore Berlins, an die Potsdamer Straße (heute der Kleistpark in Berlin-Schöneberg). Als in der Ära der Belle Époque am Ende des 19. und dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts das exzessive Wachstum Berlins eine Ausdehnung über die damaligen Stadtgrenzen hinweg erforderlich machte, geriet auch der - sich ebenfalls vergrößernde Botanische Garten - erneut ins Blickfeld der Stadtplaner. Zwischen 1888 und 1910 zog der Botanische Garten an seinen finalen Standort nach Dahlem (heute zum Bezirk Steglitz-Zehlendorf im Berliner Südwesten gehörend) auf einen ehemaligen Kartoffelacker der Domäne Dahlem (die es heute ebenfalls noch gibt) um. Das Große Tropenhaus, das Ihr teilweise im Hintergrund sehen könnt, wurde zwischen 1905 und 1907 von Alfred Körner erbaut und ist auch heute noch, mit einer Länge von 60 m und Höhe von 23 m, eine der größten Stahl-Glas-Konstruktionen der Welt.

For Sliders Sunday

A quick fun snapshot taken at the Botanical Garden this spring. I walked around, noticed some motion on the surface of one of the ponds there, and saw this small shoal of small fish flocking together in a heart shape. They were being fed at that moment, I guess.

I had forgotten that the camera's aspect ratio was still set to 1:1 (there's a dial for the different aspect ratios on the fixed lens), so here 1:1 was more of an accident than actually intended (as was f14). Usually I won't use the preset 1:1 aspect ratio because the Lumix's 12.8 megapixels will be reduced to 10 megapixels then (it's got something to do with the LX100's "multi format sensor", apparently), but unlike with my OM-D, where I only ever use 4:3, and crop the image later in LR, if desired, I often switch between 4:3 and 16:9 on the Lumix.

Processed in LR and Luminar. The water had been very muddy and dull, so I thought that this needed some colour to jazz it up a little. I don't recall each step, as this is an image I've been working on from time to time. But as a finishing touch I used a slightly tweaked Luminar preset, one of Wim Arys' "Atomic Colours", Bismuth, if I remember correctly. Added a sky texture in ON1, too.

Taken last Tuesday at the Botanical Garden. It was a moody autumn day, and really cold, too. I didn't bring gloves, because I thought it's still warm enough, but... it wasn't ;-)

(Kind of) HDR capture of the Mediterranian House which was the first greenhouse to be finished (1904) at the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden. Nowadays it does not only show flora of the Mediterranian and the Canary Islands, it can be rented by the hour for events, like weddings, as well.

#Freitagsblümchen

Old, but gold, so to say, and a foretaste of the floret season that is ready for take-off any second now ;-). Taken last April at the Berlin Botanical Garden on a very windy day. This tiny spider kept a remarkable grip on this daffodil which was wildly swaying around. Thanks to the Oly's optical 5-axis Image Stabilisation, I managed to get a few sharp captures nonetheless. Please press "Z".

Narzisstische Spinne

Die Blümchenensaison steht in den Startlöchern, aber ganz ist es noch nicht so weit, daher dieser "Oldie" vom vergangenen April, den ich immer mal hochladen wollte. Aufgenommen im Botanischen Garten an einem sehr windigen Tag. Die Mini-Spinne zeigte erstaunliches Festhaltevermögen, weil die Narzisse ganz schön wild durchgeschüttelt wurde. Der 5-Achsen-Bildstabilisierung meiner Oly sei Dank, habe ich trotzdem ein paar scharfe Aufnahmen hinbekommen. Bitte "Z" drücken.
