Spectacular opening of the Cultura Nova Internationaal Theaterfestival Heerlen this evening. A fantastic outdoor show by the French group Les Plasticiens Volants.
The group uses meters high flying fairytale figures. On the photo you see a 15 meters high flying monster/dragon Godzilla.

Cultura Nova Heerlen 2015
Heerlen has a history of mining. In 1974 the last coal mine was closed. The tall chimneys called "De Lange Jan" (The Long John) and "De Lange Lies" were destroyed by the use of ammunition soon thereafter. The outdoor performance of the French group Les Plasticiens Volants and the fireworks group Groupe F used this theme at the opening of the new cultural season at Cultura Nova in Heerlen at August 28th. Finally the monster will kill and kick down the chimney, still smoking....
Heerlen suffered from many bad years after closing the coal mines. Lots of people got unemployed and the general health of the people in the city was (after working for so many years in the mines) very poor. Then in the seventies Heerlen turned into a real junkie-city, because of the good quality of the heroin and the low prices, attracting many German addicts too. In the eighties and nineties the local government succeeeded in their fight against the drugs. Not only lots of Germans saw themselves send back to Germany, also the Dutch drug addicts got special attention and many programs were started trying to get rid of the problem. The citizens of Heerlen were very happy with the zero tolerance policy as they had suffered severely from being anxious at many places in the city where life was far from relaxed and rather dangerous.
These days Heerlen is a city wher you can still feel the wounds of the past but there is no city in the province of South Limburg where so many cultural activities take place during the year. Much more then in Maastricht, the capital of the province, where they are jealous about all what's going on these days in Heerlen. But they refuse to admit that, because the citizens of Maastricht are extremely chauvinistic and will never admit things happening outside there fantastic city could be any better...

The French "Groupe F" organised the performance of the fireworks at the opening of Cultura Nova in Heerlen 2015.
The group is famous all over the world. For instance, In 2015 they organised the fireworks at Tour Eiffel, le Pont d'Iéna et les Bassins de Trocadero in Paris.In 2006 the group made a spectectacle from the enlighting of the Olympic torch at the Olympic Games in Turino....and much much more.
