This was taken a couple of winters ago during a visit to my homeland of Wales.
They are extremely handsome, particularly when seen against the white snow showing up their colour. they are also very acrobatic in flight, which is a joy to watch.
During medival times red kites were a familar sight and were known to scavenge on the edge of towns.
In more recent times they were reduced to a mere handful of pairs in the UK, but through a programme of introduction have greatly increased.
Those in the heart of Wales, where this one was photographed, have been shown to be direct descendants of the original birds.

With its reddish-brown body, angled wings and deeply forked tail, this magnificently bird of prey is unmistakable, and none more than at wintertime. Its skilful acrobatics in flight, which are second to none, is a spectacle to watch.
Its range includes Europe and North Africa. This one was photographed in Wales, where indigenous species have survived to this day. It was flying along a snow-covered mountainside. Thankfully, re-introduction programmes in places where they have ceased to exist have seen a resurgence of the species.
Many thanks for your welcome comments, which are greatly appreciated.
