The Hornet Mimic Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria). As its name suggests, this hoverfly is an excellent mimic of the Hornet. It's about 2cm long. The adults are migratory and the larvae live inside wasp's nests scavenging on food. Until the 1940's was a rare visitor to the UK, but now is becoming more widespread and moving further north as the climate changes.

Bumble bee, bumble bee, busy bumbling all the day long, from flower to flower unceasingly buzzing and bumbling along. Not for itself does it toil and spend. It is for hive and human the sacrifice it makes. Nature's way of harvesting earth's riches that furnish our tables. Blessed are we!
