This two-week-old baby girl White Rhino was being watched over by her aunt. The baby kept trying to nurse, making pathetic little mewling noises. The aunt steered her to the water trough and tried to encourage the baby to drink. The little one wasn't interested, probably because she didn't understand what the water was for. It was interesting to see such a giant creature behaving in such a gentle and nurturing way.

The mother had disappeared two days earlier, and the rangers feared she'd been poached. Fortunately they found her the evening after this photo was taken and they drove the family back together.

In the Middle East, some cultures present a dagger made from a rhino horn to a boy who has come of age, and in Asia they believe the horn has medicinal properties. So poachers murder the rhino and take the horn, leaving the rest.

When rhinos stand like this they are likely communicating via infrasound, frequencies too low for humans to hear.

Ringo at the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire's 2010 Pet Step.

I believe he's a Petit Brabancon (a variety of the Brussels Griffon).

(Exif says 2009 for some reason, but the camera was set correctly. Weirdness.)

I was driving by and saw this. I zipped home to get my camera and I'm glad I did because an hour later it had melted away.

Unretouched -- this is straight out of the camera.

The Snack Pack in its heyday.

Panda (black), Fred, Chino (front), Spike, Allie

~~~
For those asking for more info, they are all rescues except for Spike:
Panda (1996-2013) was a puppy mill breed dog in Kansas; she'd only been out of her outdoor cage to be impregnated. She was a weird little dog for about a year after she came to live with us. Basically she stood behind furniture and barked at us. She'd never had any real interaction with people or been inside a house. Now she's the pack alpha.
Fred (1992-2008) came to Pug Rescue of New England via Arizona. He was well-loved by his family but he bit a child who was tormenting him. (I say ditch the kid, but that's just me.) No one wanted to adopt an older dog, so we just kept him. He was irascible at times, but overall he was a good boy.
Chino (1999-2014) was the victim of a broken home in Cincinnati who ended up at the house of the mother-in-law who hated dogs and left him outside in triple-digit heat.
Spike (1991-2007) was bought from a breeder in Virginia. His AKC name is Sandyhook's Perfect Image of K9 Excellence. S.P.I.K.E. (We crack ourselves up.) He was the softest dog ever made. Kids thought he was a mobile plush toy, and he loved the attention.
Allie (1996-2007) was the sweetest dog I've ever met. When we got her from Ohio Pug Rescue, they initially thought she had a thyroid problem. She actually had a pizza problem. She went mental for the pie.
