A tribute to one of 20th century's most renowned protests: a mural facing the railway tracks in Newtown showing two black athletes (gold medalist Tommie Smith and bronze medalist Juan Carlos) giving a defiant raised-fist salute at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, and the Australian athlete Peter Norman wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge stood proudly beside them.

A fight is now on to save the mural as the state government considers demolishing the house it is painted on, and its neighbours, to build a rail tunnel.

Norman was reprimanded and was not selected for the Australian team at the 1972 Olympics.

38 years later, Carlos and Smith were pallbearers at Norman's funeral in Melbourne. Carlos said Norman had shown no fear on the day: He said, 'I'll stand with you.'

Silvio Offria, who allowed an artist he knew only as Donald to paint the mural on his house, said Norman had come to Newtown to see the mural before he died in 2006. 'He came and had his photo taken, he was very happy', he said.......[Sydney Morning Herald]

In the entrance to the museum building, painted in acrylic, is Guan Wei's large-scale mural work. A crowded rowboat of refugees heads towards a new land. These naked figures are undertaking perilous journeys across vast oceans, experiencing hardship
and pain in an attempt to achieve their ideal of an earthly paradise - Australia.

Guan Wei first left China for Australia in 1989 to take up a 3-month residency at the Tasmanian School of Art and returned to live here in 1990. He has recently moved back to Beijing with his family but maintains his studio in Sydney.

Guan's work provokes its audience to think about the refugee debate in this country, and ask themselves: how will we act, we who live under the sun and with great abundance, when faced with a boat load of refugees arriving on our doorstep?.......Unearth The Rocks

A kind of mural. Not sure what the message is when she has only one ear.
