Built by the Dominicans in the early 17th century. This church has a violently dramatic past. In 1644, a military officer who supported the Spanish against the Portuguese was murdered at the altar during mass. In 1707, the Dominicans sided with the Pope against Macau's bishop in the Rites Controversy. When local soldiers tried to enforce an excommunication order on them, the friars locked themselves in the church for 3 days and pelted the soldiers with stones. In 1834, the monastic orders were suppressed and for a time the church was used by the government as barracks, stable and public works office.......[info from Macau tourism pamphlets]

This façade is like an altar piece, sitting on a small hill, with 66 stone steps leading up to it. The façade is now reinforced with concrete and steel in a way that preserves the aesthetic aspects when viewed from the front. Visitors can climb to the top of the façade from the rear via a steel staircase.

The Jesuits settled in Macau in 1565. In 1594, they created the College of the Mother of God, the first western style university in the Far East. In 1602, they added this impressive basilica to the College. The opulence of the interior made a profound impression on various visitors over the centuries.
In 1762, with the expulsion of the Jesuits, the building was abandoned and then handed over to the Leal Senado. After a few decades, a military battalion was accomodated in the premises but in 1835 a fire erupted in the kitchens of the barracks, ravaging the other buildings and destroying the church and almost all the complex. The ruins now consist of the southern stone façade - intricately carved between 1620 and 1627 by Japanese Christians in exile from their homeland and local craftsmen under the direction of Italian Jesuit Carlo Spinola.......[info from Macau tourism pamphlets]

Ascended to the top of the façade from the rear via a steel staircase. It is customary to throw coins into the top window of the ruins for luck. It was a steaming hot day. Our daughter's mother-in-law had trouble acclimatising. So wife had to stay with her at bottom of stone steps. We were sweating profusely after climbing to the top. Summer is not an ideal time to visit Macau. Time to get down for a refreshing cold drink.
