Glacier Bay was a large single glacier of solid ice till early 18th century.
It has since broken up into 20 separate glaciers.
We experienced shite weather when we took the Inner Passage Alaska cruise almost 3 years ago.

It is difficult to fathom how a glacier had retreated 105km in the space of 200 years.
There was nothing I could do to change this weather and so had to make the best use of it.
At least I didn't have to worry about the glare from a reflective white surface.

We were cruising along Glacier Bay and were a distance away from these glaciers. I had to resort to using my long lens. Luckily our room had a large balcony so I could take shots sitting down and with relative comfort.

Margerie Glacier. It was named after French geographer and geologist Emmanuel de Margerie who visited the Glacier Bay in 1913.

Tidewater glaciers are glaciers that terminate in the sea. As the ice reaches the sea, pieces break off, or calve, forming icebergs. Most tidewater glaciers calve above sea level, which often results in a tremendous splash as the iceberg strikes the water. If the water is deep, glaciers can calve underwater, causing the iceberg to suddenly leap up out of the water. This glacier type undergoes centuries-long cycles of advance and retreat that are much less affected by the climate changes currently causing the retreat of most other glaciers.......Wikipedia

Johns Hopkins Glacier was named after Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland by geologist Harry Fielding Reid who discovered it in 1893.

You can visualise the blue glacier ice slowly grinding against the dark coloured rocks as the glacier advances 3 m per day, giving the glacier this contaminated and dirty look.
