Miyajima's Shinto shrine gate @ sunset (camera facing south).

This gate stands in the sea about 200m in front of the main shrine (Itsukushima Shrine). We were lucky to have low tide when visiting.

Miyajima is a 25-minute train ride + 10-minute ferry ride from Hiroshima.

Miyajima's best known symbol - the floating torii (gate) of Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社), stands in the bay 200m in front of the shrine. The current gate, dating back to 1875, is built of camphor wood, is about 16 metres high and was built in a four-legged style to provide additional stability.

The gate appears to be floating at high tide. When the tide is low (see picture), the gate is surrounded by mud and can be accessed by foot from the island......[Wikipedia and Wikitravel]

The five-storied pagoda (五重塔 Gojuto) is next door to Senjokaku (千畳閣) in Miyajima (宮島). It is 28 metres high, is said to have been built in 1407. It shows a splendid structural beauty that skilfully combines Japanese and Chinese architectural styles. The image of Buddha is painted in full colour on an inside wall of the pagoda…..[Miyajima Tourist Association pamphlet]

Senjokaku (千畳閣), Miyajima. The name means '1000 Mat Pavilion', an apt description of this gigantic wooden hall which does not actually contain much other than empty space. It was originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587. There is a picturesque 5-storied pagoda (五重塔 Gojuto) next door…..[Wikitravel]

This place may look dark and dull but the aged timber posts and beams are one of the best I've seen.
