Take on my recent trip to Bempton cliffs. Gannets are a big success on the Yorkshire coast, Bempton cliffs are the only mainland colony for Gannets in the uk, there are about 20,000 plus breeding during the spring summer months.
If you read my last description you will know I only had with me my little canon mirrorless m50 and a couple of lenses. This shot was taken with the 15-45 kit lens, it’s tiny😀, but in all honesty I don’t think it’s too bad, yes there are sharper lenses out there, but they tend to cost a lot more money.
Bempton cliffs is well worth a visit whatever camera you may have, it’s well worth a visit if you have no camera at all, the birds are the main attraction but the views from the cliffs are pretty spectacular too and you can go on quite a good walk down to Flamborough.

Was lucky enough to have a trip to the coast yesterday, initially Filey for a walk on the beach with Honey and even though it wasn’t packed I wanted somewhere more peaceful. So after an hour or 2 I headed to Bempton cliffs and the bird reserve. Fortunately it was quieter there.

It’s Gannett heaven at Bempton cliffs, there are thousands of them there. I love watching them. Normally when I’m here you will see other photographers with enermous lenses, big cameras and big tripods. Now I do own a big zoom lens, the sigma 150 -600 mm, but it doesn’t really fit well with my canon eos m50 which I was using yesterday. Not wanting to miss out on trying to get closer images, I reverted to my little 55-200mm M lens, it’s very small and if any of you know the m50, you will know that is very small too. But not to be deterred, I set about my task of capturing birds at Bempton. I’m not going to lie to you, this Gannett in photo was about 8 or 9 metres from me, not under my toes but not a million miles away either. I am quite pleased how it as come out, it’s not as close up as some photos of Gannetts you will see, but I quite like that you can still see the environment it is in. I think it’s proof that you don’t always need a big lens or a big camera, you just have to try a different approach.

I’ve put this up for my friend Victoria, she’s the only other person I know in my contacts and friends that use an M series camera, I’m hoping she will be quite impressed with what the little 55-200 can do.

Quite difficult lighting conditions here, bright in the foreground but a little darker and hazy in the background, I think it’s come out ok though.
This is Bamford edge in the Peak District, it’s looking down on Ladybower reservoir. It’s certainly a lovely view and not too difficult to access, a bit of a uphill walk but only for 20 minutes or so.
Because so many people are not working at the moment in the uk there are a lot of people in the countryside and when you come somewhere like this you notice everybody doing selfies. To be honest when I’m out with my camera or phone the last thing I think of doing is a selfie, I think this view is far more attractive than my face😂😂😂.

For those interested in what the view is like from the reservoir looking up to Bamford edge check out one of my previous photos.

I love a bit of fog. It as a lovely way of softening the landscape and hiding some of the chaos. In the summer it very rarely lasts all day and infact it as lifted now, but winter fog can last all day and it’s well worth getting out in it with the camera.
