Housed on the grounds of the Thai Red Cross Society is the "Snake Farm." This is actually a museum, herpetology and poison research center known around the world for its development of anti venom and poison research. It is the second oldest Snake Farm in the world and was started in the 1920's. Brazil has the oldest. It is housed in a beautiful setting in central Bangkok, Thailand where life goes on around it.
SNAKE PHOBICS BEWARE! I have had a snake phobia my entire life and have postponed going to this site for over 10 years. Fortified by the desire to see this facility and by old age (if I don't go now I may never have the opportunity) I decided to take the plunge.
A fascinating intellectual facility with museum and static displays bolstered by live snakes, poisonous and non poisonous in a zoo like setting for viewing behind closed containers with protective glass, the highlight are the live exhibitions. "Milking" or extracting venom for research and development and live "snake handling" are done every day. The snake handling demonstration is with poisonous and non poisonous snakes.
Consider it IMPLOSION THERAPY for a snake phobe like myself to sit in the front row seat with a camera and telephoto lens to stare into the beady eyes of these creatures that really do benefit all of humankind. Like the grizzly bear, many of these venomous snakes are incompatible with human contact but possess a grace and beauty and useful purpose on the planet. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
