In 1943 RAF 617 Squadron, carried out Operation Chastise (Dambuster) using the The Avro Lancaster against four Dams in the Ruhr Valley using Barnes Wallis' bouncing bomb. The Derwent Dam was used to practice their famous raid.

The Möhne and Edersee Dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley were breached, causing catastrophic flooding.

Since then this event has been regularly commemorated in the Derwent Valley with fly-pasts of old bombers and aerial displays. There is a small museum on this theme in the west tower of the Derwent Dam.
